Gowers 1s vs 2s - Sunday 7th Jan

Gower Allstars 3 Gower Phoenix 0

This scoreline does not reflect what a close hard fought contest this was.

A first half which was high tempo and high tempered, saw Pheonix dominate the Allstars, out-fighting, out-witting, and out-performing them on all the 50-50s and attacking play – to the extent that the Allstars did not register one strike on goal throughout the first 45 mins.

The Phoenix should have taken the lead when a good move found Hanna in space on the edge of the area, and a fine first time effort saw a bullet strike, head toward goal – Schneider in goal managed to get a last ditch touch to deflect the power shot onto the inside of the bar – it bounced down and luckily stayed in play, only for Schneider to recover and gather.

Allstars were restricted largely to the long ball due to the tenacity and effort of the Phoenix. Much credit must be given to Hill who filled in at centre-back and stood out as their most effective defender throughout, cleaning up well and tackling like a giant. Oh and Mr Denselow for a premiership quality dive, 3 seconds after being fouled.

0-0 HT

The battle re-commenced with the Allstars having to change the way they were playing, otherwise they were heading for defeat. The head-to-head between Hanna/Selbie vs Street/Mitchell was an intriguing one for all to watch. Whilst the first half was H/S’, the second half became S/M’s.

Allstars were a touch more composed in the 2nd half and didn’t over play the ball. Some fine interchanging and moves down the left hand side created more openings than the entire first half. One of which led to a corner from which a menacingly whipped in cross from Klinger was too much for Hill to handle and a swiped clearance ended up in the back of the net

1-0 Allstars.

Although the Stars could relax a bit, and play some football with a goal advantage, the Phoenix persisted in hitting on the break, and were it not for some good defending from the centre-backs, and excellent calling from Schneider in goal, the Phoenix could have capitalised.

An attacking free-kick was taken by Sam - a classy "fill-in" on the left, which O Hagan could only manage to parry, it fell to Glyn, who subtly lobbed it back over the stranded keeper, to score a predatory goal.

2-0 Allstars.

Credit to Phoenix – not for one second did their heads dip or effort levels drop. They pushed forward looking for a quick retaliation. Allstars did however begin to play some lovely stuff, with Durrant dropping deeper, picking up the ball, coming inside, and creating opportunities with some good channel play down the right.

On 75 mins, one fine move between Mitchell, Street, Klinger, found Kelly in a one-on-one with the Phoenix centre-back, who he beat, and he then slotted away to make it 3-0 Allstars.

And that was how it finished.

A superbly fought contest – which as you can see, on general play was not a 3-0 margin, however credit to both sides – Phoenix for testing Allstars to the full, and Allstars, for bouncing back, in style to take home the victory.

Well done to all concerned.

MOTM =

Allstars – good claims for Durrant, Mitchell and Klinger, but this goes to Ossack. Whilst not a perfect display, he showed assurance, strength and composure throughout – and proved why he is such an important player at the back for the Allstars this season.

If I may be so bold as to pick a MOTM for Phoenix – I would choose Hill - apart from a sliced own goal, his performance and effort levels in an unfamiliar centre-back position, were impeccable. A fine example of commitment to the team and versatility as a player. Well done Luke.

Allstars 3 Phoenix 0

The greatest football cliché; game of two halves. Phoenix lined up with Luke ‘bicycle kick’ Hill at the back alongside the familiar faces. Up front Muffdog played alongside a random who was loitering around the pitch before kick off. Allstars lined with a strong midfield with a semi-pro left back ringer in for Stiefal.

The first half started with a period of Allstar dominance as Phoenix struggled to get hold of possession, Hana started the game slowly as was reflected in a number of late challenges and with two fast, but lightweight strikers up against the physical Glyn and classy Ossack the ball kept on coming right back at the Phoenix defence.

Fortunately Hill was outstanding in the air and strong in the interception, well marshalled as ever by Treen in the middle and the tenacity of the Phoenix full-backs. While Dens ‘forced dive’ may have been a match highlight the fact that he was accused of head butting Street’s flying boot was indicative of the low level sledging coming from a increasingly frustrated Allstars, the irritated chat from the normally imperious Gladstone evidence of Phoenix’s increasing control of the game. A free header and Hana’s piledriver saw chances come and go and while the Phoenix could feel happy at half time against good teams you have to take your chances.

2nd half and the Phoenix were against the wind. The star ringer left back moved to left mid tying up both Miles and Sam in a 45 minute battle to stop his play. Allstars increasingly moved their play to the left and were able to bypass much of the midfield battle; while Mitch cleared effectively Streety was magnificent as he drove his team forward. His was an awesome display. The pressure told and the Phoenix’s inability to clear a corner put Allstars in front. Phoenix began to look slightly ragged and our strikers dropped wide and deep to collect possession as Ossack began to hermetically seal the Allstars defence. Allstars second goal consisted of a brilliant Russ strike followed up by good commitment by Glyn and another case of defensive naivety on the part of the Phoenix defence. The third gave a gloss on the score line.

So congratulations to the squad for being able to put up two eleven aside teams that could compete so well. It’s a far cry from Wednesday training with 3 people and one barely working floodlight, so well done Phil for taking the club to a new plane. Allstars deserved this result, they played as a team and upped the game after a difficult first half. Phoenix can take heart from the fact that if we were slightly more clinical the result could have been very different. I look forward to future rematches.

MOTM: Allstars: Although Ossack’s play grew as the game wore on the ringer at left back and then left mid was class.

Phoenix: Luke Hill: Brave
