Allstars report vs Crown & Goose - Apr 29th
Crown & Goose 3 Gower Allstars 3
Division 1’s First versus Second place – both teams having qualified for promotion to the Premier – the C&G captain came over to me as we were tossing the coin, and said “We didn’t know how to congratulate you on your achievements this season, we were thinking of clapping you onto the pitch, but it didn’t happen. Anyhow, on behalf of all my team, we want to say a big congrats on your season, its been quite something”
A very nice gesture.
Nevertheless the game wasn’t played in that tone. Right from the outset, there was a niggling rivalry between the teams.
C&G wanted to put one over the unbeaten champions, and the Allstars wanted to show the 2nd place team, why they are champions.
Hard bobbly pitch again – which didn’t help the quality of football – neither did the Allstars having no keeper.
Gowers took an early lead, after some clever footwork by Klinger inside the oppositions box, forced a sliding tackle from their defender and a penalty was awarded. Medley stepped up and scored his 30th of the season. Superb landmark.
Gowers looked fairly comfortable at the back in the first 45, occasionally creating some good moves on a difficult surface.
A through-ball from Selbie, sent Blandy away who rounded the keeper, but was forced well wide and found himself practically on the by-line. With no on-coming support, he was left with no option but to attempt a tight-angled curling shot – which was executed perfectly and gave Allstars 2-0 lead going into Half-time.
Goose came out pumped and raring to go – and with Glyn in goal, they could sense vulnerability at the back.
After a wave of attacks, a simple throw-in was not cleared and a looping header could not be kept out by the desperate looking Glyn, and the score went to 2-1.
Nevertheless, testament to the clinical finishing throughout this season, Allstars extended their lead further with another fine finish from Blandy who was sent through one on one by Street.
3-1 Gower.
Gowers did not however have a good last 30 mins. There was uncertainty at the back, with bad decision making – culminating in another concession of a goal – again from a throw-in which Goose’s striker flicked on low and hard, and it crept into the near post.
3-2
Allstars had a couple of decent chances to further extend their lead, but failed to do so, and it was Goose who took the initiative, capitalising on some clumsy play in the box, when the ball bounced up and hit Chittenden on the arm, conceding a penalty.
C&G converted and the game then finished 3-3.
On reflection, it was a fair result – C&G really fought hard, and Gowers were unimpressive in the last 30 mins. Had we had a keeper, the Allstars would have wrapped the game up with a victory, but it wasn’t to be.
Most importantly, the unbeaten run continues.
Played 13, won 10, drawn 3. One league game to come next week, against BVH. And the big cup final – May 13th, 12pm KO, at Wingate & Finchley – confirmed.
Also confirmed is 20th May – Allstars vs Phoenix last game of the season – battle of the titans – make sure you are there.
MOTM = Owen Blandy, constant menace, created as well as scored two classy goals, and has more than cemented his place in the Allstars squad. Well done.
