Mixer Outfight Phoenix

Mixer 4 Phoenix 0

Gower Phoenix (4-4-2) Greg – Dens, Wall, Ell, Henry – Lucas, Jake, Jon, Miles – Fleshie, Toby

On a wet and windy Regents Park Sunday the Phoenix were unable to overcome a stubborn Mixer side although the score line hides what was a close encounter.

The pitch was sticky and the ref overly friendly to the Mixer team yet after a one minute silence Phoenix were their own worst enemy. Indecision and an uncharacteristic nervousness saw early pressure around the Phoenix box, with several corners and goal mouth scrambles. Eventually after Hanna conceded a foul 25 yards out, the Mixer striker curled the ball just past Greg’s finger tips to put Mixer 1-0 up.

Phoenix winger Toby then immediately pulled up with a groin strain, forcing him up front and Adam Lucas to the unfamiliar left flank. Centre back Elliot then hurt his ankle which steadily deteriorated before both players had to go off 70 minutes in.
Despite this Phoenix had some half chances to equalise with Fleshie and Toby going close from in the area and Jon Hanna shooting straight at the keeper. The Wall was winning most of the headers against the direct system of Mixer play and Henry De’ath was not losing many challenges on the right flank.

Half time and on comes Bolu and Phoenix step up a gear and come close to getting that equaliser. Corners and a dangerous Dens free kick were cleared off the line and just when Phoenix looked to be getting back into it, Mixer score on the break and take a 2-0 lead. Phoenix heads dropped and the two walking wounded left the pitch allowing a now eager Mixer side to score two more and give the score a slightly flattering look.

So a loss on what is technically the hardest league fixture of the season. Still if Phoenix win at Market road in the early kick off in a revenge match against Northern then a league win is still easily within our own hands. We must show our commitment next Sunday – all turn up early and ready in body and mind!

MOTM: Greg – Pulled off lots of fine stops including a point blank save after a corner wasn’t cleared.
