Allstars vs Tufnell Park Rangers - league

Gowers came up against an exceptionally hungry Tufnell Park Rangers, who set out their intent right from the first whistle.

Big tackles, with good attacking wing play put the Gowers under immediate pressure, and were it not for some good first half defending by Glyn and Rene, Gowers would have been losing in the first half.

Attacking wise the Allstars were not at the races, passing wasn’t right, movement was non-existent and composure was distinctly lacking – all of which resulted in Gowers resorting to long ball play – which ultimately created very little.

Half chances for Durrant, Klinger and Medley were the highlights of a distinctly unimaginative half for the Gowers.

Infact TPR probably deserved a lead, when a corner was vollied perfectly into the corner of the goal, only for it to bullet against Rene’s thigh on the post, which saved the day.

0-0 HT.

Gowers soon broke the deadlock from the most unexpected of situations, when Chittenden took a long free-kick on the right, 40yards from goal – high and with top-spin, the goalkeeper always looked in trouble and fumbled it into his own net.

1-0 Gower.

With a bit of confidence, Gowers started to dominate the midfield – but not for long enough.

TPR continued to threaten the back four, and the first half bravery soon disappeared, when the centre backs stood off the TPR striker, who had time to place a shot low and hard in off the post, giving Paley no chance. 1-1.

The lacklustre performance got even worse, when TPR took the lead from a long ball over the top which Paley came to claim and ultimately didn’t get enough on it, and it fell nicely to TPR who half-volleyed into the top corner.

2-1 TPR.

Ricky and Mitchell began to find their feet, in the midfield a bit more, and Durrant on the right created some decent channel play – but it was a lucky decision from a corner, from which the Ref gave a penalty to Gower for tugging shirts. Up stood Ricky, who put it away.

2-2 – 30 mins to go.

Sensing the match could go either way, both teams went for all out attack – and it was the best move of the match, which created the next goal.

Perfect inter-change play between Ricky, to Klinger, Klinger to Medley on the left, who beat his man, ran to the by-line and crossed with his left foot powerfully across the keeper, who could only parry to the on-rushing Ricky, who slotted home. A rare fine move amongst otherwise dis-jointed attacking play.

3-2 Gower.

13 mins to hold out – but TPR never stopped believing. And again it was a difficult ball over the top, between the centre-backs and the keeper, right on the edge of the box. Paley tried to claim, and missed. The 15-yard header was high and just wide and as Glyn and Milburn attempted to parry the bouncing ball off for a goal-kick, or so they thought, the sneaky TPR striker, ran in from behind to knick the ball from Glyn and head in to the net, from an exceptionally difficult angle. Bad play from all the defence. Good play by the striker.

And that was how the game finished.

3-3 and the Allstars somewhat scraped a draw.

Whether it was tiredness, complacency or a bit of both, we clearly were not all there on Sunday. Much like Manchester United, we were lacking any tempo, any rhythm or composure. It was actually worrying at times, that we could stoop to such levels – however, we must give credit to a good strong and exceptionally driven TPR.

Moving forward, we seriously need to go back to basics, to do what we do best……..pass and move, 5-10 yards passes, play it sensible, and attack and defend as a team. We all know it, yet we didn’t put it into practice.

We have a couple of easier weeks now, (games in both week) before the absolute crunch game against Outback on Mar 2nd – who are now only 3pts behind us – same games played. Admittedly, they still have to play Red Star, TPR, Virgin and us in their remaining 4 games, so they will deserve the title if they win all four of them. But we need to concentrate on us. On getting our rhythm back, working the ball, and dominating our opposition. Starts this Sunday in the MA Cup against top of Div 2 side, Camden Athletic. 2pm UCS.

MOTM = Rene, for a neigh-on flawless first half performance which stood out from the rest. Welcome to the Allstars ma man.
