Crown & Goose vs Gower Phoenix match report Oct 19th

Hannah Magic sinks Crown and Goose

Crown and Goose 1 – 2 Phoenix

(Allister – Luke, Treeno, Joel, Elliot – Joe, James, John H, Lucas, Miles – Jamie W)

After last weeks morale boosting victory against the Allstars, Phoenix sought their first league win of the season on a windy and decidedly autumnal Sunday afternoon at Regents Park. Once again Phoenix had a much changed team with four members of last weeks starting eleven missing. The team essentially contained one goalie, four centre backs and six midfielders.

Unbowed by these disadvantages and with a desire to prove to absent skipper Denselow (sunning himself in the Caribbean at the time) that they were better off without him, Phoenix started strongly. With Elliot and Miles combining well on the right and Joe having the better of his fullback on the left it wasn’t long before Phoenix started creating chances. Unfortunately the finishing lacked confidence and the Crown and Goose keeper was proving to be their best performer. The defence was reasonably untroubled except for the odd loss of concentration, one of which required Allister to block well from their Striker.

Against the run of play Crown and Goose scored from a corner. Using the elements well they hung the ball up in the wind, crowded the six yard area and their only decent player found the top corner of the net with an excellent header. Would Phoenix crumble after this set back as they had in previous games or come back stronger? The answer was swift, within one minute Phoenix had created an excellent opening for Miles only for the winger to shoot wide. However Phoenix would not have to wait long for an equaliser when Miles broke down the right and centred for Jamie W to slot home.

Phoenix turned round 1-1 at half time knowing how crucial the next 45 minutes were for their season. Lucas, James and John H were bossing the midfield but with the deteriorating conditions chances were at a premium. It took a moment of skill to break the deadlock. John H received the ball in midfield and surged forward, shrugging off two Crown and Goose challenges before rifling low into the corner of the net from 25 yards.

Phoenix saw out the remainder of the game in relative comfort even having a spell down to 10 men after Hill (despite pre match assertions of fitness) succumbed to cramp. So an important three points won. It wasn’t always pretty but the whole team worked hard and ground out a victory.

Man of the Match – John Hanna. Won countless challenges in the middle and scored decisive goal.
