Phoenix Lose When 5-Minutes Away From Safety

Gower Phoenix (4-4-2) Glyn (Russ 45’) – Dens, Wall, Treen, Greg – Jamie, Lucas, Miles, Jo Paley – Bolu, Toby
Gower Phoenix were 5 minutes away from safety from relegation when a late 2 goal blast sank their chances.
Against a decent TPR team Phoenix gave as good as they got in the first half with stand in keeper Phil ‘the cat’ Glyn rarely troubled. TPR were causing Gower problems but lacked cutting edge in the final move and lots of shots were blasted wide. Phoenix had some good chances, Miles just missed out on a Dens free kick and regular scorer Lucas had a goal disallowed for offside by the youngest linesman in history.
Second half saw Greg go in goal for the first time ever – and he did excellently. Phoenix soaked up a lot of pressure with new boy Jamie outstanding at the back. Lucas looked certain to score after a sustained period of Phoenix pressure but was denied by an excellent save. Then after TPR were pinging it around the Gower box, Dens cleared long and the TPR let it bounce and Bolu was in – surging past two before scoring into an empty net – 1-0.
More TPR pressure continued but Phoenix stayed strong. With five minutes to go and the TPR main striker struggling with an ankle injury – things looked good. Then disaster – first a TPR corner went virtually right in with the wind. 1-1. Then another long ball caused TPR panic and Bolu drove in on goal passing to give Toby an excellent opportunity that he just couldn’t take. TPR counterattacked and scored. 2-1.
Gutting, but that is how football pans out sometimes – considering the numbers of players missing Phoenix gave it a good shot against the 3rd best team in the league. We’ve got a chance to get out own back next week – be ready.
MOTM – Bolu – Caused havoc in the TPR defence with his strength and direct running.
