Phoenix show grit in drawing a match they should have won

TPR 1 Gower Phoenix 1

Gower Phoenix (4-4-2) The Cat – Dens, Jamie W, Selbie, Bradley – Miles, Henry (Wall 45”) Lucas (Charlie 20”) Bolu – Jules, Toby

Goal: Toby

Gower Phoenix should have won this game in the first half but in the end a freak 30 yard lob saw them draw 1-1 with title challengers TPR.

On a small bumpy pitch on a windy autumnal morning, Phoenix dominated right from the start. Bolu was a wrecking ball on the left where TPR could not handle his direct running, setting up good half chances for Jules and Toby that were not converted. Jules, who ran tireless throughout, just missed out on a far post header and had several shooting chances that on another day would have put Phoenix 3-0 up.

Jamie Wood and Selbie were solid at the back and the cat was not called upon to make a single save in the first half. Henry carried over his effective break up play and distribution in the middle, where he was joined by Charlie, following an injury to Lucas, who showed some excellent touches. Miles and Bradley had the winning of the right flank, Bradley having a number of shots from range.

TPR were rattled and conceded 3 yellow cards in the first ½, mainly for hacking down Bolu and Jules. Eventually some credit was given to Phoenix constant attacking when Toby turned in a pass from Henry with the last kick of the half.

The second ½ was started with 10 men as Henry was forced to leave and the Wall rushing to join us. Disaster struck within 5 minutes when a long range shot (?) managed to lob the cat from 30-40 yards – Phoenix were in shock and not even sure how the ball had gone in. With the wind against us and TPR’s tails up we had to battle hard with ten men – Bolu in particular making some mammoth challenges in the centre of the pitch.

When numerical parity was restored Phoenix began to reassert themselves and several half chances from corners and free kicks were not taken.

In the end we know that we need to be more clinical and not rush our shooting. (shooting practice before next game!) but otherwise we were much the better team and have set out in the first ½ of the season how Phoenix is a challenger for the top of the league rather than a battler at the bottom of it.

MOTM: Bolu – really committed running and work in attack and defence – still needs to get his decision making right on when to shoot and when to pass! Well done matey!

Dens

PS – I’m away for the next four games – Lucas and the Wall will be in charge of things with support from Phil.
