ALL STARS BIASED MATCH REPORT: ALL STARS V. PHOENIX

Intro
In swamp-like conditions, Ranulf Rd hosted an inter-club semi final (miscellaneous cup) clash: All Stars v Phoenix. On a difficult pitch the game lacked quality at times but there was never any lack of commitment or direction on either side. Both teams are well organised and played with a purpose that comes from winning games.

First half
Playing down the slope proved to be a significant advantage - with both teams enjoying pre-eminent periods when playing with the benefit of the slope and relatively dry land from which to launch attacks.

All Stars played down the slope in the first half, with the ‘dry’ conditions in the upper half of the pitch allowing them to play out from the back and string together some incisive moves.

All Stars created plenty of good goal scoring opportunities, with Jamie and Owen’s link play proving very hard to contain. Owen hit the target with several powerful strikes. The Phoenix keeper, however, made some excellent saves. One in particular low to his left was outstanding. Jamie also had opportunities, one of which, a left foot strike from a tight angle, snuck agonisingly wide (from an all star perspective).

All Stars did finally take the lead when Owen followed up his own initial header (saved by Sam) to bundle home.

However, the Phoenix rear-guard, led by Selby and the Wall, were clearly primed for the test and defended with authority in heavy conditions to restrict All Stars to 1-0 lead at half time. Phoenix hung in the much, safe in the knowledge that their time would come in the second half.

Second Half
Phoenix, having focused on restricting the All Stars lead, now began to gear up the offensive side of their game. Jules saw more of the ball, as the Phoenix midfield compressed play and began to hem the All Stars in. Phoenix created several half chances and forced a series of corners. One header from Patrick sailed just wide of the All Stars goal. A close call.

Then followed a moment of controversy that could have swung the course of the game. The ball went out of play and the All Stars drifted up the pitch anticipating an All Stars throw. Henry, of the Phoenix, (aka Manu Petit), put the ball down and asked the referee if he could start play with a free kick. The referee obliged, much to the astonishment of the All Stars back 4. A simple ball from Henry played into space behind the right side (Phoenix left) of the ill-prepared defence released Jules into acres of space. Jules squared (backwards - therefore, rightly, no offside) to Toby with the All Stars defence still a long way off the pace. This was the chance…. but the ball skewed off the outside of Toby’s boot and did not trouble Ulrich. Toby appeared to lose his footing at the crucial moment.

Phoenix continued to push and created a series of half-chances. During this period the All Stars back 4 just about held firm, led by Byfield who put in a display to further boost the arguments of those that suggest a winter break is the way forward. During this period the work rate of Caird and Aaron was crucial, whilst Chads bravery in playing through a hamstring injury was fundamental to the team retaining its shape. The All Stars only mounted the odd counter-attack up the hill. One such attack saw Sampson provide a pin-point delivery from the right wing (not for the first time) and Owen, at the back post, headed wide when a second goal seemed inevitable in light of O’s current form.

Summary

In the end, the All Stars held out. This was not vintage All Stars - too often we were guilty of playing the wrong ball/long ball out of defence when more thoughtful distribution would have relieved the pressure. However, no doubt this is credit to Phoenix who put us under great pressure and, by the end, had knocked us well out of the composed approach with which we had set out.

Men worthy of mention
Henry - A powerful authoritative presence for the Phoenix.

Ben Caird - on debut, energy, commitment and quality - clearly a player who can improve the All Stars and could play a very important role in the final weeks of the season.

Phil - support from the touchline hitting newlevels (decibels).

Man of the match
Tom Byfield. Solid, calm and composed. Saw the All Stars through a rocky spell.

Allstars vs Old Elysians – League – Match Report

Allstars prevail as Elysians show their age

Regent’s park is often a battlefield for many on a Sunday afternoon. This Sunday was no exception as Gower Allstars managed another victory as they charged back to the top of MA Premier League.

Old Elysians are not your average Sunday league team in terms of organisation.

However, on the pitch they were made to look average by a willing and determined Allstar outfit.
The Allstars lined up in familiar fashion with Dave G coming in for Tom and Ollie shifting into the centre of defence. This established line-up is now gelling nicely ahead of the title run-in.

On a windy afternoon, the game was never going to be a classic. The midfield was looking ugly on both sides as neither team could get a hold of possession. Gradually the Allstars began to stamp their authority on the game. Marshalled by Chad’s and the bullish Aron, the defence was holding up nicely. Gaps were starting to appear which allowed Dave and Suresh to push forward via some clever interplay with Samps and Yianni.

It took a long ball up field to open the scoring. It was flicked on by Blandy to his strike partner, Jamie then managed to muscle his defender off the ball and round the keeper before squeezing the ball into the left hand corner. 1-0

Although the first half was not one for the neutrals, the Allstars did manage one very nice move culminating in a cool finish by Chads. 2-0

Halftime and still all to play for.

With the wind in their sails the Allstars pushed for a goal they knew would kill the game off. It was not coming easily as Elysians began to see more of the ball. Their No10 being particularly effective in centre midfield. The tide did turn though as Aron began to run the show; closing down all over the pitch, winning challenges and spreading he play nicely. This soon resulted in a chance for Jamie on the right hand side of the area which he duly dispatched with his left foot into the far corner. 3-0

This goal should’ve have put the game to bed put Elysians carved another opportunity which required a fantastic save from Ulrich to keep out. Two saves of the highest quality in two weeks from Ulrich!

However, the next Elysian attack did manage to beat the Allstar defence as a failed clearance from a corner gave the Elysian midfielder time to pick his spot with a thunderous strike. 3-1

The game hotted up slightly as the goal gave Elysian the inevitable boost they needed, this was in all vain ultimately as Blandy managed to squeeze in a lucky shot through the keepers fingers. 4-1 Full Time

MOTM – No arguments this week as Aron really deserved it. Work-rate, Tenacity, Aggression and sheer determination from Aron really propelled the Allstars forward. A great performance, Well done!

Notable mention to Jamie for two very well taken goals on his ‘weaker foot!’ and Ulrich for another fantastic save and near perfect game.

Phoenix vs Tufnell Park Wangers

If it is possible to have a nemesis in Sunday League football, then consider TPR Professor Moriarty to Phoenix’s Sherlock Holmes. Games rarely finish without some kind of altercation, including actual bodily harm, grievous bodily harm and intent to harm. On the pitch, the games are usually hard fought, and any kind of result is celebrated. The last time we played TPR, we managed to lose a two goal advantage and ended up drawing, so we were desperate to finish the job off this time around.

The first half kicked off with Phoenix playing uphill and into the wind. Coupled with an early kick off, it took us a while before we started playing anything resembling football. Despite a number of early chances, TPR could not break through our defence, who were the only Phoenix players awake. Jamie Davis and John Selbie were excellent from the off, but eventually the deadlock was broken midway through the first half. A looping TPR corner was turned in at close range, but heads did not drop. Phoenix responded with panache, and five minutes later the scores were levelled. Fernando picked up the ball in the oppositions half and cut across field, playing a ball through the defenders to the onrushing Jules, who finished well under pressure.

With the scores levelled Phoenix started to play with more confidence, and with all things considered, a draw a half time was a good result.

With no subs on the bench the team remained unchanged, with Dens on the left behind Bradley, Alex and the Babymaker in midfield, and the Wall and Timmy on the right. Jules and Fernando continued their mythical partnership upfront.

The first few minutes of the second half went phoenix’s way, but we just couldn’t capitalise on our chances. Then ten minutes in disaster happened. The Babymaker tried to mount one of the TPR players in the box, and a penalty was duly given. Alex Manby Jr who was deputising for Sam in goal went the right way, and was unlucky to see the ball deflect in for a goal.

Real character was needed to turn the game around, and with twenty minutes left on the clock, Phoenix grabbed the bull by the horns and started to really play. The Babymaker, who was undoubtedly crushed by his giving away of the penalty ran as if the whips of Satan were upon him, forcing himself through a number of challenges before twatting one in off the post. The goal tilted the balance of power in favour of Phoenix, who like a school of piranhas, smelt blood.

Jules led by example and ran his socks off, ensuring that no TPR player has more than a micro-second on the ball. With Phoenix starting to press, TPR were giving the ball away across the park. Timmy, who was having a blinder on the right, robbed one of the oppo of the ball before bending in a shot from the edge of the area. The keeper fumbled, and Jules showed great instinct to bury the parried shot. Three two up and Phoenix continued to look for more goals, Bradley had a shot from way out drift narrowly wide, and Fernando wasted a good opportunity by chipping the ball into the keeper’s hands.

In order to protect such a slender lead, Jules made the decision to put five in midfield, and Fernando dropped to right mid. The tactical change made an instant difference, and some great interplay from The Wall and Timmy on the right saw Jules free on goal. El Capitano wasted no time in securing the victory, by planting a solid strike past the keeper from a tight angle. Four two, and one of the finest performances from a Phoenix side in the history of the club, showing immense character to come back from behind not once, but twice.

Man of the Match: Jules. By far the best performance of his Camden Musical Association League career. The well deserved hat-trick could not have come at a more important time, and his tactical decision to swamp the midfield worked excellently.

Match report - Virgin vs Allstars - league

Allstars silence NME’s title challenge

A return to green pastures prompted the return of some meaningful opposition for the Allstars. After countless weeks of re-arranged fixtures and weak opposition a tasty looking game was now on the menu.

The Allstars lined up with a familiar back four, strengthened by the return of very own ‘JT’ after a well rested winter break! Flanked by the adventurous Suresh and long throwing Ollie, Dave and Tom can really guide the team from the back.. The middle four was also a strong looking outfit with the bullish tenacity of Aron aligned with Chad’s craft and guile in centre mid. With Samps and Yianni always willing to provide strong running and good delivery’s in the final third, the midfield now has a fine balance. The introduction of Jamie up front with Blandy is always going to trouble any side at this level as his awareness touch and vision is second to none.

It was great conditions for the game, albeit slightly windy but on a well manicured pitch at Ranulf Rd (credit to the grounds man, whoever he is!) the Allstars would always be able to play their brand of football. The Allstars started the game quickly working extremely hard from the front 2 downwards, hassling the Virgin team not giving them time on the ball. This proved fruitful as a long ball up from the defence was pounced upon by Blandy as he forced the Virgin defender into making a mistake, nicked the ball from under his feet and finished by poking around the keeper. 1-0

Another well worked move involving Jamie (Pedro) and Yianni released Blandy on the left who crossed for his strike partner at the far post who despite sliding full length, narrowly missed extending the Allstar’s lead. The game settled slightly as Virgin’s strikers had various sniffs down the channels but ultimately nothing came to fruit. The back four were operating as a tight unit clearing when necessary and operating a good line to catch Virgin offside. Chad’s and Aron began to assert their authority on the game with strong challenges all over the pitch. In particular was Chad’s ability to turn out of trouble and feed a teammate in near impossible situations, a talented player who has cemented his place in the team in his first season at the club.

With a fragile lead the Allstars were saved by a save of true class by Ulrich, the Virgin attacker hit a vicious swerving shot that was heading for the top right hand corner, with half the team convinced it was in, Ulrich flew throw the air and managed to get a strong right hand to the ball sending it away for a virgin corner. There is no doubt that Ulrich has brought a lot to the team and with saves like that, a team will respond positively knowing that they have stalwart as the last line of defence.

Two thirds of the way into the first half and the Allstars managed to double the lead. The ball found its way to Yianni on the left hand side 40yards to goal. Showing some very tidy close control and strong upper body work he managed to shrug off several ‘would be’ tacklers, progressing into the penalty area he then put boot to leather and slammed a shot into the near post leaving the Virgin keeper with singed fingernails.2-0 and the Allstars could deservedly breathe easy.

Half time and Phil urged us to up the game as despite the 2 goal advantage, the game was not won.

2nd half began slowly with no real chances for either side, the game really changed for the worse when Virgin were awarded a dubious penalty of which they duly dispatched. 2-1 = Game on!

The Allstars now really needed to kill this game off, a draw at this stage of the season would not only dent title hopes but confidence within the squad. The team began to get on top again as gaps opened in the channels, this resulted in several corners from which to attack from. With Blandy off corner duty it was Jamie’s responsibility and he delivered time and time again from either side and amazingly with either foot! One such corner was swung beautifully to the back post, Dave Ossack readying himself to nod in the decisive goal only for Blandy to take it off his head (photo to follow). Dave reminding Blandy that he should listen to the call!

The decisive goal did come however with good work from Ollie and Samps down the right leading to an opening for Blandy to whip in a cross for his strike partner who got in front of the defender to guide home. 3-1 A lovely goal and one which really settled the team.

MOTM – Difficult to pick as no-one played badly and the whole team worked well together for the full 90 minutes. But this week it goes to Ulrich for a wonderful save and for several consistent performances in recent weeks. Notable mention to Jamie who linked up fantastically well with teammates and maintained a strong work rate throughout.

The Camden Musical Association League Cup is as exciting as it gets, and just like the FA Cup there are some truly eye watering fixtures. This was one of them, but far from being a cup upset, Phoenix ensured our third consecutive victory with an eight nil victory over Submarine.

With Sam out, Alex Manby volunteered to play in goal for the first half. His defence was made up of Bradley on the right, Pat on the left, and Selbie and The Wall in the centre. Pat and Alex looked to continue their excellent form on the flanks, and Henry linked up once again with Jamie Davies to boss the midfield. El Capitano Jules and Fernando 'El Nino' Denselow made up the main strike force.

Phoenix started brightly, but with the surface around the opposition’s goal resembling Passchendaele, chances were being spurned left right and centre. The only way we could seemingly score was to run the ball into the net. Jules tried this and was duly hacked down for a penalty. In stepped Fernando, who banished his recent penalty demons by hammering the ball past the keeper. The pitch was not making life easy, and did not help our style of play at all. Jules again tried to run the ball into the goal, this time he skipped past a number of challenges before finishing clinically into the bottom left hand corner of the goal.

Other note worthy attempts on goal include a Fernando free kick that hit the post, and a wonderful piece of skill from Alex on the wing, who chipped the ball over an oncoming defender and then volleyed inches wide from 30 yards out.

Two nil at half time and the score line could have been three times what it was. The pitch was terrible, but we were guilty of missing some excellent chances. The half time talk called for more of the same, and the team was rejiggled to fit in Alex Manby, who was replaced by Bradley in goal. Alex joined Henry at centre mid, and Jamie Davies dropped to centre back.

The second half, despite playing uphill and against the wind turned into a goal fest, with six goals scored. Jules added to the tally shortly after the break with a tidy finish, and Fernando grabbed his second. With the two strikers both looking for their hat-tricks, Jules was eager to get his third hat-trick for the club before his turn in goal, which was rapidly approaching. Despite two or three attempts in quick succession, Jules was unlucky not to get his hat-trick, and replaced Bradley in goal for the second half of the second half. Henry moved up to play alongside Fernando, and Raj came on for Pat, who had another solid performance.

Fernando grabbed his hat-trick courtesy of a Henry through ball, and paid back the service by putting 'The Babymaker' through twice. ‘The Babymaker’ is not known for his goal scoring prowess, but took his two chances excellently, remaining onside before finishing smartly into the corners. With the last kick of the game, Phoenix got their eighth goal after some great running from Pete, whose shot was eventually bundled in by Fernando for his forth of the game.

Eight nil and a great performance all round. Man of the Match goes to Jules, who scored two crackers, won a penalty, and ran rings round their defence. Jules has been consistently good all season both on and off the pitch, getting on the score sheet and setting up chances aplenty, but most importantly he has organised the team, and is a vocal and passionate captain on the pitch.

Phoenix plough AC for Six!

With political and social unrest occurring in Tunisia and Egypt, revolutions are proving to be a popular past time. However, these revolutions are not just reserved for Middle Eastern states, but also for members of the Camden Musical Association League. The resignation of the old guard, espoused by the captaincy of James ‘Mubarak’ Denselow has been replaced by a younger breed of amateur footballer, and under the stewardship of Jules ‘the speedster Elbaradei’, Phoenix have continued their excellent run of form.

Last week’s game against Old Elysians, which saw Pheonix score five, was a key performance, and one which was intended to be built upon. Phoenix did that against Camden AC in style, and on a fairly rugged pitch, pulled off a composed and clinical victory, scoring six without reply.

The team was similar to last weeks, Sam in goal, Bradley at right back, Pat at Left back and Iron Mike and Danny ‘The Wall’ at centre back. Henry ‘the Babymaker’ and Jamie Davies occupied the centre of midfield, flanked by Alex and Pete on the wings. Upfront was the formidable partnership of Jules and Fernando.

The game started brightly, and Phoenix found themselves ahead in the first minute, some great running by Pete allowed Bradley to finish at a tight angle. Phoenix doubled their lead a few minutes later; this time a cross from Jules met the head of Pete, who nestled the ball in off the post. The score remained two nil throughout the first half, and Phoenix remained under the cosh for large periods of play, and were lucky on several instances not to concede.

The second half saw a much more composed style of play, and Jamie Davies in particular was spreading the ball around patiently, waiting for the chance to find that killer pass. We extended our lead ten minutes into the second half courtesy of a free kick from Jules, which was whipped in such venom that the keeper could only parry it into his own net.

Three nil up and the flood gates opened. AC were losing the fitness battle, and started giving the ball away cheaply, often just outside their own area. This style of suicidal football suited Phoenix, who capitalised rapaciously on their opponent’s fatigue. Fernando added to his goal tally with a tap in after some great work by Jules on the left. Pete scored a blinder, sending in a low stuck shot from the right of the area that almost ripped the net, and Alex scored our sixth, rounding the keeper before finishing into the empty net.

Six nil, and a great display of football all round. Sam made some great saves to grab his second clean sheet in a row. Pete, Alex and Jules ran their socks off, a key reason for the oppositions weary legs, who tried and failed to keep up. The ‘Babymaker’ also had a fine game, breaking up play and generally bossing the midfield.

Man of the Match: Difficult choice between Iron Mike and Jamie D, who both had exemplary performances, but the award goes to Jamie D, for his calm passing and dry wit.

Phoenix hit Old Elysians for five

After an extended Christmas break, Gower Phoenix returned to winning ways in some style, thrashing Old Elysians five nil in a hard fought and at times violent match.

The team has managed to retain a core spine throughout the season, with Sam in goal, Jamie Davies at centre back, Pat on the left, Henry ‘the Babymaker’ in centre mid, Pete on the right, and Jules ‘the speedster Slazenger’ and Fernando upfront. With Ben deciding he would rather travel the world instead of play for Phoenix, Alex Manby stepped into centre mid. We also welcomed two new additions with Ben Dyson hoovering up at right back, and Mike accompanying Jamie D at the back.

Despite the score line, Phoenix were only one goal up for the majority of the game. Fifteen minutes in Fernando Denselow got past their right back to finish calmly inside the near post. This took some pressure off, yet the deadlock would remain well into the second half. The oppo had a few chances in the first half, but nothing that Sam could not comfortably handle. Phoenix also had some good chances in the first half, another Fernando effort hit the bar, and Jules had a shot drift narrowly wide.

The halftime talk highlighted the major problems, which were an inherent fondness to always seek the killer ball rather than retain possession, and also a lack of hold up play by the two strikers. The second half continued where the first had left off, with neither side being able to retain possession for more than a pass or two. Special mention must go to the ‘Babymaker’ and Manby, who were instrumental in our winning of the midfield battle, breaking up the oppos play whilst spreading the ball to our wide men on the flanks.

Pete came off midway through the second half, and Alex came on, meaning that we now had a plethora of players called Alex on the pitch. It may be incidental, but with three Alex’s on the pitch Phoenix started to play some real football.
Fernando grabbed his second after robbing their right back of the ball and finishing well in to the corner of the goal, and Alex (the sub) grabbed a goal with his first kick of the ball, unleashing a powerful drive from the edge of the box. Manby had a header cleared off the line, and Fernando managed to get his hatrick, lobbing the keeper who had Banzai charged out of his area.

Unfortunately, the oppo’s frustration hit boiling point, and from the kick off, things turned sour. Manby, who had been having a blinder all game, saw himself at the end of a horror challenge from a disgruntled man-child. After pointing out the stupidity of the challenge, Manby was suddenly punched in the face. The referee, who had been repressively meek in style, had no choice but to send him off. Special mention must once again go to Manby, who reacted in a truly impressive way, exercising commendable self restraint.

With the oppo reduced to ten men, Phoenix grabbed a fifth goal, Alex (not the sub) carried the ball up the left flank before cutting in and nestling an inch perfect shot past the keeper inside the far post. The icing on the cake. Great display in the end after a slow start. The defence were solid and the clean sheet shows how in control they were. Ben had an excellent debut at right back, and Pat continued his excellent season, linking up well with Alex on the left. Jules had another industrious performance, and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet, especially as his lady friend on the sideline was expecting goals. Luckily for her, Fernando was on fire with what can only be described as a fanny moistening performance.

MOTM= Alex Manby, bossed the midfield, was unlucky to not get on the score sheet, and reacted remarkably to being punched in the face.

Allstars cruise to easy victory over M.A league minnows

The confidence and expectation of beating a very poor Sunday league oufit was emphasied even more when the Allstars were still confident faced with only 10 men to start.
10 men soon turned to 11 as Phil used his negoiation skills to tempt Jahmal into playing for us. Normally a risky decision to recurit a randomner, this case proved otherwise as Jahmal was a tricky winger who looked eager and willing throughout the game with some good end products to match.
Other ringers included Ben’s mate, Ciaran who scored a questionable goal/cross in the first 10 mins but did have a decent game overall. Geordie No. 9 , Harry also started up top and put in some good touches before a hamstring tweak put a dampner on his afternoon. Alex Hill, normally a first rate Goalie debuted at Left back and was an absolute rock, rising to meet any aerial challenge and launching long throw ins, he provided a strong base for the Allstars to launch attack after attack.

As said before, the opposition really are a weak side and it really was a matter of how many the Allstars would score.

Goals from BottsX2, Harry, Gavin, Owenx3 (4th hatrick in 5 games!), Ciaran sealed an 8-1 victory with the only downside being a weak goal conceded.

Another notabel contribution was Phil Glyn, who has now made the reseve Goalkeeper position his own after ‘reacting’ superbly to save a 2nd half penalty cunnigingly hit with no power or direction.

MOTM- Has to be Alex Hill for a very dominant performance from Left Back.

Phoenix turn up the heat with a 4:1 victory against league minnows

With the pitches still frozen rock solid, there was some ambiguity about whether the match would kick off or not. After a cursory examination of nearby pitches we opted to move onto a slightly more thawed pitch, but it would prove to be a very difficult surface to play on, and a difficult game in general.

With the referee late again, we benefited from the entrepreneurial exploits of a gang of loveable rogues, who were more eager to ref the match than many of us were to play. With only eleven men on the team sheet, Pheonix were buoyed by the return of Sam, whose outstanding form this season has been a large reason for our recent success. Ahead of him was the steady defensive line of James ‘Bo’ Bradley, Jamie Wood, Jamie Davies and Dens. Ben and ‘The Babymaker’ looked to continue their excellent centre midfield partnership, and two newbies, Sam and ‘T’ provided our width. Upfront were the dynamic duo of Jules ‘the Speedster’ Slazenger and Fernando Denselow.

The game started brightly, Fernando Denselow tested the keeper early on, and saw his long shot touched over the bar by the Clissold keeper. Ben also had an excellent long shot saved, as Phoenix looked odds on to score first. The deadlock was broken very early on, a corner from Sam found its way to the far post, where ‘T’ calmly slotted the ball inside the near post. Despite going ahead, Phoenix immediately found themselves on the back foot, and Clissold had several goal scoring opportunities denied by Sam, the pick of the bunch being a one-on-one, which Sam got out quickly to smother.

Half time came quickly and allowed the team to analysis their first half display. The general consensus being a lack of patience going forward, this often meant looking for the killer ball when other options were available.

This did seem to have some impact on the team’s second half performance, and ten minutes in we had doubled our lead. A corner from Sam was turned in by Jules, who showed immense composure to control the ball in mid air before powerfully volleying it past the keeper. The second goal seemed to spur on Clissold even more, and Phoenix again started losing possession across the field, allowing the oppo a series of chances to score. Sam again proved his worth, with save after save, including a remarkable reaction save from close range, which he managed to turn around the post for a corner.

With Clissold committing men forward, it was no surprise that Phoenix managed to grab a third from a classic counter-attacking move, Ben striding forward with the ball released Fernando Denselow, who nut-megged a defender before finishing clinically into the corner of the goal. Three nil up, and Phoenix temporarily took their foot off the pedal, allowing Clissold briefly back into the game. Some scrappy play saw the ball ping pong inside the Phoenix box, unfortunately falling to a Clissold striker who couldn’t miss from 6 yards out. But the match was put beyond doubt five minutes before the end, courtesy of another great counter-attacking move. Jules sprinting down the left drew the Clissold defence out of position, and he found Fernando Denselow unmarked in the box, who side-footed the ball into the far corner of the goal.

An interesting game, the score line doesn’t give justice to the oppo, who played well, and were only kept out the game by the hands, feet and face of Sam. Phoenix should possibly have scored more, Jules had a great opportunity saved, ‘T’ hit the post, and ‘The Babymaker’ dragged a shot wide early in the first half.

Man of the Match: Sam: A great goalkeeping display, on a hard frozen pitch. With the low sun shining into his eyes for the first half, Sam showed exactly what the difference a good keeper can make at this level.

Phoenix Refuses to be Deflowered by Persistent Virgin

Match Report: Phoenix vs Virgin

Early kick offs are often troublesome affairs in Sunday League football. Numbers usually diminish, and the people who do turn up still smell of stale vomit from the night before. This provides a rich excuse for poor form, lazy shooting and general malaise, symptoms seldom aided by excessive consumption of alcohol and/or crack cocaine.

Despite a sterling effort by Jules ‘The Speedster’ Slazenger to procure enough manpower to cover one or two subs, by Saturday night Phoenix were only eleven strong. This situation was made even worse by a major pull-out Sunday morning, and despite a determined attempt to boost numbers, Phoenix approached the game with only ten men. Crucially, the man missing was the keeper.

After some asking around, a randomer caught smoking on the sideline was eventually persuaded not to watch his 13 year old son play football, and in stepped Devon between the sticks. We now had eleven men, a cause for celebration in itself, but although a battle had been won, the war was yet to start.

Phoenix lined up with ‘The Wall’ and Bradley as centre backs, flanked on both sides by Dens and Alex. Pete returned from injury to play right mid, Pat looked to continue his excellent form on the left, and Miles and Henry ‘The Babymaker’ occupied the centre midfield roles. Up front was the formidable pairing of Jules and Fernando Denselow, two of the most prolific strikers the Musical Association League has ever seen.

Despite a meticulous and methodical warm up, Phoenix conceded a goal in the opening minutes of the match. A speculative ball over the top was met by the head of Virgin striker, who looped the ball calmly over Devon. Phoenix responded well to going behind, and a few minutes later the scores were level. A mazy run by Alex was followed by a venomous cross low into the box, and the virgin players could do nothing except watch the ball career off one of their own defenders into the goal.

With the scores level Phoenix turned on the style. Miles and the ‘Babymaker’ started bossing the midfield, spreading the ball quickly across the pitch to the wide men, who were having lots of joy against their opposite numbers. A few minutes before half time, Phoenix wasted an excellent opportunity to take the lead, yet the usually prolific Fernando Denselow saw his shot saved from close range.

The second half saw a different phoenix team on the pitch. Passing was sloppy, our shape was spasmodic, and Phoenix looked tired. With our attacking options in short supply, Virgin started to look dangerous. Cue the Phoenix defence. Never in the history of the Musical Association League has so much been owed to so few, and the four at the back repelled attack after attack to ensure a hard earned draw against the league leaders. Dens especially made two excellent sliding tackles in the box, and Devon was vocal in goal, constantly comparing the Phoenix defence to Fort Knox.

Men of the Match: The Defence. Difficult to single out anyone really, Bradley and the Wall had the Virgin strikers in their pockets, and Alex and Dens were equally solid on the flanks.

Match Report, Phoenix vs Tufnell Park Wangers

Sunday league football has somewhat developed a reputation for casual violence, and the classic image of hapless tackles, hastily draw accusations of offside, and crying in the rain, is as truer representation of any. Luckily, the predominantly middle class Gower Phoenix are above such acts of skulduggery, but the same cannot be said for TPR.

Kick off started late as usual. Miles offered to ref the match until the actual ref arrived, but his offer fell upon deaf ears, as the elders of TPR deemed him untrustworthy. Luckily for football, a Virgin player helped out, but not wanting to make any waves, he allowed play to go on in the first minute of the match after Jules was hacked down in the area. With a similar team to last week, bar the exceptions of Lucas and Miles, Phoenix responded well to the injustice wrought down upon them by the virgin ref, an apt name given his inexperience. Looking for their fifth consecutive victory, Phoenix started the brighter of the two teams, and with more synergy to the side, good football seemed to come easily.

However, TPR were also going into the match on a (legal) high, as they remained the only team in the league to stay unbeaten. You only have to look at their defence to wonder why, as their two centre defenders were massive, and were clearly no strangers to the game. Yet the age old question of what happens when a unstoppable force meets an immovable object springs to mind, as facing that defence were the tricky duo of Jules ‘the speedster’ Slazenger and Fernando Denselow. It only took fifteen minutes before the deadlock was broken, Fernando Denselow managed to rob one of the behemoth defenders of the ball before running into the box and finishing in the bottom right hand corner, his seventh goal in five games!

The goal seemed to give Phoenix confidence, and Ben and Lucas started to dominate the centre of the park. Pat in particular was having a blinder from the off, and despite playing against TPR’s chaviest player, found himself constantly getting past him on the left. With most of the possession in Phoenix hands, a second goal looked extremely likely. Predictably, our second goal came from a Balesque cross from Pat, who after a one-two with Jules found Lucas at the far post, who finished well. The goal proved to be a double-edged sword as Lucas came off straight away after colliding with the keeper. Miles replaced him, yet the injury had jarred the team, and TPR took advantage with a vengeance, scoring two in the dying minutes of the half.

The second half saw few chances from Phoenix, and as TPR looked for the winner, Phoenix pulled together to pull off a fantastic defensive display, repelling attack after attack from a strong TPR side. A draw seemed to be the most realistic result, but suddenly in the last minute of the match Pat intercepted a cross field pass and galloped into the oppo’s half. With a small crowd of spectators lining the side of the pitch, volleys of support were ladled on to the onrushing Pat, who had only the keeper to beat. However, the champagne finish was stopped short as the keeper managed to pull off a fine safe, deflecting the ball out for a corner and subsequently the end of the match.

Man of the Match= Pat. A versatile player who can play anywhere on the left, he has cemented himself as a key member of the team after only a handful of appearances. By far our strongest player on the day, his strong running and intelligent passing kept us in the game.

Match report: Phoenix vs Harpo

The gods seemed to be conspiring against Phoenix, who were dealt a few blows before even a ball was kicked. Yet far from being a cursed team, Phoenix showed great spirit to come back from behind to win their fourth consecutive game. After some very unfortunate pull outs prior to kick off, Phoenix looked likely to be starting with ten men, but after some speculative recruitment, aided by the ref’s poor tardiness , we managed to scrape eleven players together thanks to Mike. Mike joined Jules upfront, and Toby dropped into centre midfield alongside ‘The Babymaker’, who were flanked by Pete on the right and Dens on the left.

With a wet surface the ball was skidding quickly of the grass, and the opening ten minutes were a scrappy affair, with both teams sloppily giving the ball away. The deadlock was broken just after the ten minute mark, a Harpo hoof managed to evade the back four, allowing the Harpo striker to run into the box and finish well into the corner. Harpo certainly looked the hungrier of the sides, and literally in the keeper’s case, as Harpo appeared to persuade a local vagrant to play between the sticks.

The chance of a comeback was given a massive blow when, following an elbow to the side of the head, Bradley was forced to go off with a suspected concussion. Again lady luck was not on our side. With only ten men on the pitch, Toby swapped with Jules and Dens dropped to left back, allowing pat to push forward on the left. However, Phoenix are no strangers to chasing a game, having conceded early goals in their last two matches, and within fifteen minutes we were 2:1 up. The first goal came courtesy of a quality header from Pete, who rose above the Harpo defence to power home a Jules corner. Two minutes later Jules unleashed a powerful free-kick from 25 yards out, which the keeper could only fumble out to Mike who finished with a typical poachers goal.

Against all odds, Phoenix found themselves in the lead going into the second half, and were granted a gift from the gods in the guise of Leo, who slotted into a Nani like role almost instantaneously. With eleven men on the pitch, Phoenix started to play some football, and despite Harpo attempts to get another goal, Phoenix looked dangerous on the attack, with Pete, Toby and Leo all coming close. In some great flowing counter-attacking football, Pheonix grabbed a third late on to settle the match once and for all. Leo sprinting down the left found Fernando Denselow in the box who finished first time into the top left-hand corner, his sixth goal in four games! In the dying minutes of the game, Phoenix managed to grab a forth, with the impressive Mike lofting the ball into the far corner of the net from outside the box.

An excellent display from Phoenix puts them in line for the championship, and next week sees a must win against TPR. Man of the Match award goes to Jules, who had an absolute blinder, providing two assists whilst bossing the midfield with some mazy runs and generally being nice and vocal. Which we like! Hasta la victoria siempre!!!!!!!!

Match Report: Phoenix vs Groucho 24th Oct

Groucho have proved to be a difficult team in recent years, and a definite thorn in the sides of Gower Phoenix. However, with more synergy to the side this season, Phoenix grabbed their third victory in as many games, with goals from Bradley, Toby and Jules to seal a well deserved 3:1 victory.

Phoenix started brightly, passing quickly and creating bags of chances up front. Henry ‘The Babymaker’ Goodfellow had several opportunities within a short space of time, yet was unable to convert, opting to hit the post instead. With all the possession, it was only a matter of time until Phoenix scored, and that they did 20 minutes into the first half, Jules combining with Toby on the edge of the area to find ‘The Babymaker’, who’s shot careered off the post into the path of Bradley, who finished with aplomb from a tight angle. Despite remaining in complete control, Groucho scored a freak goal just before half time, which saw Sam being lobbed from outside the area by a side footed half volley, clearly not what the player meant!

In the second half Phoenix carried on from where they left off, but found it difficult to take their chances. Ben and Henry worked tirelessly in the midfield, and Pete excelled on the right, making darting runs whenever he had the chance. Special mention must go out to Jamie Wood in particular who won every single header against the Groucho striker who was at least 10 ft 5. (Ben also managed to out jump him which was pretty impressive). Phoenix finally broke the deadlock with 10 minutes to go courtesy of Fernando Denselow, who chipped the ball through two oncoming defenders before darting into space and finishing low into the right-hand corner from just inside the area.

With Phoenix in the lead we decided to rest on our laurels and Groucho reacted positively to falling behind for the second time. However, the defence held strong, and the back line of Jamie Wood, Bradley, Danny “The Wall and Pat dealt with everything thrown at them. James Mandel, making his debut for the club played very well on the left, but succumbed to fatigue, possibly due to the 90 mins played before the match. Dens replaced him for the last half hour and instantly made his mark, feeding balls over the left back to Jules and Patrick, who moved up to left midfield. With Phoenix being bombarded by largely ineffective long balls, Jules scored on a counter-attack to seal victory. Pete showed his defensive credentials by clearing a ball out the area, and Toby headed the ball into the oppo’s half, where Jules sprinted the ball into the area and finished clinically over the onrushing keeper.

Man of the Match = Ben, worked his socks off and gave the oppo no time on the ball.

What a juicy start to the season!
Both sides lined up with a 4-5-1 formation with lots of injuries and absentees from both sides.
And with both sides playing more defensively, the first half was a bit of a stale mate.
Apart from one break by the allstars which saw botterill finish on the volley for the allstars, past a helpless Luke hill in goal.

30 mins point and the game is pretty even and then out of nowhere a long goal kick from phoenix flies over the allstars back four, and dave goldsmith in midfield to his credit tried to sweep it up on the volley, 30 yards in front of his goal - and in a freakish clearance, the ball spins off his foot, completely wrong-footing Ulrich the allstars new keeper, from 30 yards out, and finds it's way in to the net.

1-1 half time

Second half saw a much better game.
Allstars created several good chances for medley upfront on his own., to give allstars the lead, but he was having was having one of 'those' days and nothing went in for him. On another day, he could have had a hatrick.

Phoenix were however not giving up. They put some nice passing moves together toward the end of the second half, and created two chances for them to take the lead - but they too were squandered.

The allstars finished stronger and their endeavour finally paid off in the last 5 mins when a 20 yard speculative effort from Azouz looked like it was to be a simple mandatory save for hill but unluckily for him the ball bobbled up just as he bent down to pick it up. It bounced up off his Shoulder and fell to allstars winger Yianni who was following up, and he just passed it into an empty net. Harsh but allstars deserved the victory in the end on the sheer number of chances created.

Gower Phoenix 2009/10 Review of the Season

The men of the Phoenix enjoyed a mixed season, doing well in the Group Cup before exiting at the Semi-Final. In the league too many games were drawn which should have been won, which was frustrating as it means that our low league position does not reflect what is a talented team.

Too often squad availability was a key determinant of results. Phoenix lost several players in the post-Season including former player of the season Jon Hanna and Greg Laing. During the season goalkeeper Allister quit, Bolu left to work in Hong Kong and Jamie Davis went travelling. Moving to south London restricted the appearances of the talented Rob too.

Welcome new additions to the squad mean that as long as people are committed, we can hope for a far more productive 2010/11 season. Benji is a flexible player who can play on either flank and has brought alot of character to the team (as well as many of his friends too!). Ronnie is a real find and will be one of the most important players for the next campaign – clearly a goal threat and a dynamic chap to boot. Also welcome to the Phoenix to Erik and Ulrich. Erik seems to be able to play anywhere on the pitch and has real technique. Max Klinger could be the new Russ! Ulrich has always one of the league’s best keepers with Crown and Goose and we welcome him with open arms to the Phoenix.

Players we’d like to see more of include Charlie of whom we saw glimpses of, Miles – Phoenix from the start but away alot and missed, Alex Wright – maybe the best defender in the club, the rapid Nick, Danny’s mate Ash who scored one of the individual goals of the season in the cup semi, Rob who now lives in South London but is amazing, Jo Paley and his mate Fred, Bolu and any of his brothers!

In terms of the regulars Jamie Wood consolidated himself as an excellent centre back during the season. I don’t think I’ve seen him lose a header. Playing alongside him we didn’t see enough of Treen as we’d have liked too, Selbie was determined and brave as ever and Bradley, the ‘Essien’ of the Phoenix, was full of running and scored a couple of spectacular goals including an amazing curling effort against Virgin.

The Wall is a pillar of Phoenix football and the most dependable member of the team, even playing in the driving rain when he was struggling with the flu. Henry D was there from the start of the Phoenix team and still is one of the true characters of the team, what he lacks in football skills he makes up for with big tackles and lots of running. Luke Hill also braved being between the sticks during the season, at one point leaving his wedding ring somewhere on a pitch at UCS! New boy Henry was one of the finds of the season – the Emmanuel Petit of the Phoenix – all big tackles and solid distribution, also managed to juggle playing with the birth of his first child. Mitch moved from Allstars and worked his socks off for his new team. Jules was always one of our more threatening players but will know that he has the ability to be far more devastating – with his pace and skill he really should be up there with the top scorers.

Toby did score a fair few including a brilliant hat trick against the All Stars, but struggled with fitness and shin splints for a fair amount of the season. Adam Lucas was second top scorer and is always and danger coming from deep, was a solid vice-skipper too.

Outback FC vs Gower Allstars - match report May 2nd

Great game for Allstars.
Without a keeper, so Kelly kindly goes in goal - and we had no centre backs so Glyn had to play outfield.
Allstars had a v.strong team out though especially with attacking threats all over the pitch.
Gowers however get off to worst possible start after 20 mins, conceding two freakish goals from high balls

But then bounce back in style – fast.
2 slick well-taken goals from Botterill and two more blinders from sampson saw a 2-0 deficit turned on its head into a commanding and powerful 4-2 lead, against the title contenders.

A strong midfield combined with a great defensive back four performance saw any threat of Outback bouncing back early in the 2nd half, quashed – and gowers held strong throughout the 2nd half to bring home an important victory.
MOTM – jointly between ollie and Lawrence, for two practically perfect full-back performances
That win means the league is wide open, and I think, although am not positive because results have not been updated on the site, that we are still in with a shout if we win our next 2 games against TPR and Virgin. I will update you when I know but in the meantime, here is the schedule for the final 3 games of the season:-

Gower news update w/c 26-04-10

Allstars lost 1-0 to TPR in the league 3 weeks ago, in a game of missed chances.

Allstars were then awarded 5-0 win over Crown & Goose after they could not field a side yet again.

C & G subsequently folded their side and Glyn seized the opportunity to recruit their quality goalkeeper Ulrich, who has been playing in this league for many years and is perfect replacement for the Phoenix. He has duly accepted the offer and will play for Gower from here on wards. Welcome on-board Ulrich...

Phoenix play in Semi-final of Group Cup this coming Sunday 2nd May at 10am against Virgin at Market Road.

Allstars play in a crunch league match against Outback, straight after, at 12pm at Market Road. Outback have two games remaining – against Phoenix and Allstars - win both and they win the league. We beat them and title is wide open.

All should come and support both teams...

Ossack out for rest of season after twistiing his ankle in 5 aside yesterday. 90% ouf of cup final.

Outback vs Allstars - MA Cup quarter report

The Allstars battled it out with the league leaders and title favourites, outback, in the MA Cup quarter final, with the winners being rewarded with a semifinal against Crown & Goose.

Outback came into the match not having a lost a game since September, but in the last 3 weeks, the Stars had finally hit some form with 3 good wins on the spin. Game on.

The opening was lively with both teams showing some danger upfront. But despite Outback threatening , it was the gowers who took the lead when the lethal combination of Botts and Owen combined on the counter sending Owen through one on one, and he coolly finished to make it 1-0.

The lead didnt last long, some shaky defending at a corner allowed the Outback player to finish well. 1-1

And outback surged on, putting pressure on the Gowers when they had the ball, forcing mistakes – and their good work paid off when an attack resulted in a good strike across the keeper – to give Outback a 2-1 lead with 30 mins gone.

Credit to the gowers and to the quality of the match, they struck back almost immediately, evening up the match again, when roger struck a sweeeet left-foot volley after a corner, powering into the roof of the net, giving the keeper no chance.

2-2 tit for tat.
Soon enough it was half time and the game was there for the taking for both sides.
If the Stars could step up their game by 25% it was theirs.
Gowers started the half stronger, hungrier and what seemed, slightly more focused than outback.
Aaron in midfield was driving the team forward with the help of Roger, which allowed the back four to push forward quicker, and force the mistakes onto Outback.
But both teams wanted this. Tackles were flying in on from both sides, on a difficult bobbly pitch. Players going off and on the pitch injured.

The referee was one of the worst ever. Both sides hated him, although the gowers did get their fair share of good decisions, which gave them some momentum.
20 mins to go, it becomes tense as both sides can knick a potential winner.

Then a Couple of important clearances by debutant Stuart Madeley at centre back, saved the gowers.

But Botts and Owen, and Ollie and Mike were getting more into the game as time went on. And it was in fact Lol who spotted the overlap by full back Ollie, and pinged an A1 pass across the pitch, to find him in space on the wing. Couple of touches later, Ollie sweeps in a tantalising cross... right in between their back 4 and their keeper – a peach of a cross – which finds Botts storming in and he finishes sweetly to give gowers a very important 3-2 lead. Fine goal indeed.

The game was soon sealed by a strike of the highest quality from Mike Kelly, who had an audacious attempt at goal from all over 30 yards, with top spin, and top corner precision, and his perfect strike burst the top corner of the net - giving Gowers an unassailable 4-2 lead.

The allstars punished 10-man Outback even further in the last 10 minutes with two fine finishes from Botterill, one of which was a particularly graceful chip over the keeper – and the final score ended at 6-2 with the Gowers inflicting Outbacks first defeat in 6 months and giving the Allstars 4 wins on the bounce.

I have to say, this was a tough tough test against a steely, solid outfit of Outback with a good defence, but there was a grit and determination about the Allstars in that 2nd half, which was reminiscent of the first half of last season, when they went 11 unbeaten. Playing football, with a solid spine through the team, every one of the team fighting for each other, and showing real quality at times in both defence and attack.

Big performance. Big win. Big statement to the league.
Semi-final this Sunday vs Crown & Goose, then 5 league games in a row, all against our tital rivals. Win them all, and we win the league. Believe.

Keep this momentum, this focus, this effort level, and theres no reason you cannot win the double. You are the team on form.

MOTM = Tempted to make it a "team MOTM" as everyone played well and worked hard, especially in that second half. However aaron was immense again this week, a much needed terrier in the heart of midfield, but this weeks MOTM is going to Stuart Madeley, mainly for the contrast in his two halves. Having not played 11 aside for 2 years, he got off to particularly shaky start in the 1st half and looked vulnerable at centre back, but credit to him, he found his feet in a gritty 2nd half, which tested him to the full, and he actually finished the match as Gowers best defender. Impressive turnaround, impressive character and debut. Well done.

Now for semi-final Sunday – no complacency. With their strongest 11, C & G can play. Believe me, they can. So we treat Sunday as a tough game, and be focused and determined from the first whistle.

Allstars vs groucho match report 14-03-10

Allstars came through a tough test in the league on Sunday against a determined, and organised groucho in difficult conditions.

With early possession and some tough tackling in the middle from Aaron and Roger, the Allstars were able to control a first half with the wind in their favour, and eventually after 30 mins Botterill broke through from the middle only to lob on the on-rushing keeper and follow up to tap home into an empty net.

And thanks to some solid defending from all the back four, noticeably Tom and Lawrence, the stars went in to half time 1-0 up.

The second half was a tougher ask against the strong wind, and the defence were pinned back for much of the half.
But thanks to some quality support from the midfield, none more so than from the engine of Aaron, the back four kept Speedy largely quiet in goal.

Attacking chances were few and far between but when the Gowers did counter, Botterill and Blandy looked threatening.

Couple of crunching last ditch tackles from Byfield kept Groucho at bay, right up until the 90th minute, when with Groucho pushing forward, Owen broke down the left and picked out the sprinting Botts on the right hand side, to leave him yet again with a lob over the keeper and follow-up tap in. cool and composed yet again.

2-0 game over.
Important good win for Gower. Looked solid, had a foundation and also looked classy at times, pleasing win.
Fact is – we have 5 league games remaining (outback, virgin, TPR twice and Crown & Goose), win them all, no one can catch us, and we win the league.

MOTM = close contenders from the classy controlling Roger, from the immense returning Tom, but this weeks MOTM goes to the terrier in midfield, the driving force of the team on Sunday, Aaron Azouz. He was everywhere, winning everything. Inspirational for his team mates and only his 2nd game in for Gowers . Impressive. Well done Aaron.

A confident and professional display from Gower Phoenix saw them overcome 10-men C&G after an early scare.

With less than five minutes gone and after Phoenix were already camping out in C&G's box - the opposition counter-attacked and played their striker through who was brought down by a brave Ronnie attempt to get the ball (he got nowhere near). Thankfully the defence had got back and Ronnie only got a yellow - C&G put away the Pen to go 1-0 up.

The lead didn't last too long. Good link up play across the midfield played in Lucas on the right - his strong cross was turned in by Toby at close range. Botts made it 2-1 to Phoenix after skipping away from a couple of weak challenges.

In the second half Phoenix turned on the style. Bradley powered a header into the net from a swinging Jules corner. Lucas converted a penalty after Toby was brought down. Botts scored another before Jules accurate shot put the game way beyond C&G.

Henry was not allowing any room for the oppo in the middle and was linking up well with Lucas. Meanwhile the back stayed focused with Luke Hill using his height and excellent kicking to keep confidence flowing. Ronnie smashed in the eighth before all the Phoenix attack were guilty of missing some sitters as the showboating clicked in.

MOTM - James Bradley - Excellent at the back again and peach of a header from a corner.

Allstars report vs ultramarine - MA 2nd rnd

An allstar team with many new but skilful faces, comprehensively beat a 10-man ultramarine side in the 2nd round of the MA Cup.

Some lovely football was played in the first half – particularly by the likes of ex-Gower captain Paul Sampson in an unfamiliar right back position as well as Aaron Azouz hustling and hounding in the middle creating opportunities on the counter.

A fine goal came from good work down the wing from Owen Blandy, who got to the by-line and crossed in for the on-rushing justin who netted neatly.

Allstars doubled their lead with great work from both Aarons, who sent through Blandy, who tucked away first time from the stranded keeper.

Ultramarine carved open the Gower defence once and once only, and should have pulled one back but they blasted over.

Ollie Durrant however topped off a good performance with a fine run down the wing, into space, and finished into the corner of the net, low and hard, giving the keeper no chance.

3-0 half time and the allstars could relax somewhat in the 2nd half- and maybe a bit too much when Ossack playing his 2nd match of the day, missed the ball and debutant Adam Lawrence struggled when the ball was taken away from him, and a penalty was awarded. And converted.

3-1 half a game on.

Gowers however responded superbly, with goals from two other debutants, Yianni and Kieron, and it should have been 4 or 5 more by the time the final whistle went.

Good performance all round especially and noticeably from all the debutants. You know who you are.

MOTM = few strong contenders but todays award goes to Justin in the centre of midfield who had his best performance in a gower shirt. He was every where, he was strong in the tackle, he scored and should have scored 2 more, testimant to the running he did to get himself in the right positions at the right times. Well done.

Into the quarterfinals vs Outback now. But before that we have a tough league game against Groucho on Sunday....

A generally poor game on football on a uneven pitch in the bright sunshine at Regents park ended with a narrow win for Outback.

Phoenix welcomed 4 new players to the team - all of who had good games. However the team was shorn of 4 centre backs and Mitch and Bradley had to stand in. This almost allowed Outback two instant chances as Phoenix dawdled on the ball - thankfully new keeper Sam kept them out.

Phoenix then settled down and started to look dangerous. A moment of class from Ash saw him taken down in the area - clear penalty that Toby hit right at the keeper. Then Ash was played in by Jules and should have finished by the keeper saved again.

Phoenix struggled to win headers in our final third and just before half time a snap shop from a head down allowed Outback to go in with an underserved 1-0 lead.

Second 1/2 and decent play from the dynamic Phil in the middle led to Ash being carved down in the area again after a mazy run. Jules stepped up and hit it wide. Finally after Toby was brought down Phil smashed it in to make it 1-1. Then Jules had a great chance to make it 2 -1 but just delayed his shot too long.

Outback should have scored from a corner and eventually did after a misunderstanding allowed them to go right through the middle and score the winner.

Not a classic by any means but with a KEY CUP SEMI FINAL on the 21st of March - competition for places will be tight - Crown and Goose next weekend - lets be up for it.

Phoenix Denied at the Last

Gower Phoenix were denied a last minute winner by an outrageous outside call which would have given the team a deserved victory over the league leaders.

Phoenix, following weeks of rain delayed games and a poor showing in the MA cup, were far more positive and looked to press forward from the start. With Ronnie doing a sterling job in goal for the first half the team looked comfortable in possession. The first blood went to Phoenix when the ball was passed across the edge of the area and Bradley ran onto it shooting first time with a sidefooted effort that flew like a bullet in off the cross bar. It was a goal that would not have looked out of place on Match of the Day goal of the month, superb. 1-0.

Phoenix were their own worst enemy in letting the oppo back into the game and gave away several free kicks allowing them to kick to their 8 foot tall striker, Ronnie thankfully was up to the task. Not clearing the ball properly would cost Phoenix dearly, firstly after picking up a deserved yellow card, the Wall was unlucky to see an effort deflect off him to dribble in to the net to make it 1-1.

Phoenix bounced back and Mitch was breaking up play in the middle and Toby and Nick looked dangerous up front. Phoenix went back in front when Dens picked up possession and pushed up on the left before disecting the opposition's defence with a cross that Toby collected and finished past the keeper. 2-1 at half time.

Phoenix kept it at that score largely due to very robust defending, which didn't allow the oppo near our goal which now had Henry in it. Selbie and Jamie were putting in one helleva stint, highlights including Jamie's takedown of a long ball followed by keepy-upies and then a clearance. Phoenix should have made it 3-2 when a driven near post corner bounced around their area for ages with numerous goal line clearances.

Sadly Grocho made it 2-2 when Phoenix dalied on the ball in their own area and with five minutes to go a lucky break put their striker clean through to make it 3-2 Grocho. Thankfully Phoenix rallied to the cause and good work from Bradley and Lucas saw the play switched to Toby who played in Ronnie to burst into the area and cooly finish to make it 3-3.

With minutes to go Toby combined again to slot the ball back to Nick who finished, but for no reason at all (beyond pressure from the oppo subs bench) the goal was not awarded. Criminal.

Anyhow, 3-3 was the result and alot of positives for Phoenix to take into some important upcoming cup games.

MOTM - Ronnie - great work in goal and a vital goal scored outfield. Well done mate.

Match report Allstars vs Mixer - MA Cup 1st Rnd

The allstars won a competitive MA cup tie 2-1 against a determined Camden Mixer side.

Chances were a plenty for the likes of Botterill, Kelly, and Nik – none of which converted.

And it was Mixer who took the lead after a dubious free-kick was awarded to Mixer as Speed ran out of goal and punched away a bouncing ball on the edge of his area.

A top corner beauty left Speed no chance – so it was the Allstars who had to play catch up despite controlling large parts of the game.

Sterling performances from Dave Goldsmith in the middle and Ollie Durrant on the right, meant the chances continued for Allstars, and finally after 30 mins, the Gowers got what they deserved after Durrant walloped a fine finish from close distance.

1-1 half time.

Despite an uncertain first half at the back, the Gowers defence steadied the ship in the 2nd half, through the centre backs, which gave the side a good platform to push on.

An effective 2nd half from Botterill on the left began to open up the Mixer side more and more, and it was on 65 mins that a winding, skilful run took Botts into the Mixer penalty area – and the defenders could only bring him down before he struck goalwards. Penalty given.

Botts stood and up and coolly slotted home in off the post.

Several other chances came along for Gowers, down the right through Aaron (debut) and through the middle after more good work from Goldsmith and Justin - but none were taken and the game finished 2-1. Allstars progress to 2nd round of MA Cup – next opponents Ultramarine (div 1 mid-table team),

Solid performance – and one to build on for 2010.

MOTM = Dave Goldsmith, stood out from the rest. Tenacious tackling, composed passing and general driving force for the team. Excellent performance. Well done.

match report - Allstars vs TPR - Group Cup 29-11-09

The The Allstars put in a good old gritty performance against title chasers TPR, on a soaking wet, boggy pitch at Parliament Hill – needing to beat their opposition by two goals to stand a chance of progressing from the group stages of the Group Cup.

Some absentees in Jules and Luke, meant Glyn had to play his first 90 mins in 6 months, and at left back -having not yet come through a full training session – not ideal.

But it was Gowers who were hungrier from the start. Several opportunities arose for Ollie and Owen, the strangest of which was converted by Owen from a somewhat mishit cross which the keeper could not keep out.

TPR to their credit bounced back and threatened the allstars goal, with some sustained pressure, but overall the back four were clearing their lines well, on a very difficult surface.

That was until right on half time, when the TPR midfielder was not closed down and had a free shot from 22 yards which he converted into the corner of the net. Speedy had no chance.

Gowers started the 2nd half the stronger side, and again numerous good chances came for Owen and Ollie, but none were converted. Worrying opportunities missed.

Then it was TPRs turn to put pressure on the Gower defence.

Good wing play from the opposition caused Gowers problems, and crosses were firing in left right and centre for a good 15 mins.

And credit to the Gowers back four – somehow they kept that pending goal at bay.

And then the turning point of the match. A dubious offside decision allowed the TPR striker to skip away from Wrighty, and create a one on one from himself. But up steps Ossack with those long legs of his, sliding across the area blocking the striker as he released his shot. It was a tackle as a good as scoring a goal.
Refreshed and relieved, the Gowers then came back into the game. A strong finish from Ollie, from Owen and especially from Toby, caused big problems for the back four of TPR.
A penalty was awarded to Gowers after a random miscontrol from the TPR defender – up stepped Owen determined to overcome his penalty fears. Unfortunately those fears are still there, after he walloped it straight down the middle, a bit too hard and the keeper saved.

But Owen more than made up for it with some excellent work down the left, crossing superbly for Toby who tapped in finishing well.

2-1 and 10 mins to find one more goal.

TPRs attitude and lip was shocking right from the off. And it was compounded by their frustration of being behind – 3 yellow cards later Gowers had them rocked.

A couple of surprise shots by Glyn fully tested the keeper – who was TPRs best player.

And with just a few mins to go – a quality free kick from Lawrence found Toby 8 yards out and he directed the ball sublimely into the top corner – to give gowers the two goal cushion they so needed.

The last few mins boiled over even more, and the match was concluded with a horror stamp on Ollie’s chest – which deservedly saw red.

Overall a very pleasing 3-1 win indeed – a tough match in tough conditions.

Special mentions to go to Dave Goldsmith – for an accomplished performance in centre of midfield, Toby for two quality goals, Speedy for a couple of important saves, Wrighty for coming through his first 90 mins and playing so well, but MOTM was Dave Ossack who bossed the Gower defence throughout. Didnt put one foot wrong, and saved a certain goal.

Progression from the group requires TPR to beat Virgin by no more than a couple of goals. Its complicated but we have a decent chance – especially with two best 2nd places going through as well as winners of each group.
Onwards and upwards boys.

Phoenix match report vs Submarine 22-11-09

Gower phoenix went into this game on the back of a five match unbeaten run, and having won 4-0 in their last outing, were feeling confident about continuing their hot streak on a rather chilly Sunday morning. With the referee keen to get off quickly after the match, the Gowers were rushed into this fixture after what can only be described as a quickie ‘relaxed’ warm up from skipper Adam Lucas. To makes things more difficult, the side was left without a recognised goalkeeper or any subs. So particular praise must go to Luke who offered to fill in behind the sticks in what turned out to be an impressive performance with his unorthodox but effective kung-fu style saves.

The opening exchanges were competitive as both sides fought to earn the right to play. Within minutes Jamie Davies twisted his angle on the boggy surface, but without any options on the bench, was forced to play up front with Jules. This meant a bit of a reshuffle as Miles dropped into right back and Toby ‘Aryan Solider’ Denselow slotting in at right-mid. The rest of the team lined up with Treen and Selbie at centre back and Bradley making his return at left-back. Benji pushed up to left-mid, and the creative duo of Henry and Lucas in the middle of the park. After ten minutes it appeared an inspired forced formation change. Jules ran onto a ball over the top and just beat the onrushing keeper to the ball, however it needed a previously unheard of Usain-Bolt style dash from Jamie Davies to poke the ball home from two yards. The early goal gave Phoenix a lift and the midfield started passing the ball around intelligently, with Henry and Lucas imposing themselves in the centre. Despite the Gowers surviving an onslaught of corners over a ten minute period, they always looked dangerous in attack with Jules outpacing the lumbering defence at every opportunity. One such attack resulted in some good work from Benji and Henry on the left, and lo-and-behold the poacher Jamie was there again to nick the ball home. 2 touches, 2 goals – so far a better goals to touch ratio than Arshavin!

Now the team was starting to get into the swings of things and playing with an assured swagger. Toby held off a strong challenge and put Jules through on the half way line. He paced through the back line and it seemed the perfect moment to open his account for the season. Somehow he managed to mishit the ball from a few yards out, and you could hear the (sympathetic) groans from the rest of the side. With Selbie and Treen strong at the back, a goal for the opposition was looking less likely. Miles played a great ball over the top that the centre-back missed (not for the first time) and Jules managed to slide the ball past the excitable goalkeeper to finally score. The Phoenix then started the second half in confident mood, buoyed on by 4 subs for the opposition (one of whom appeared to be prostitute and coke-snorting TV star Angus Deaton). Toby and Benji were becoming more influential in the match on the wings, and the full backs started to push forward to get in on the action. Bradley who had hadn’t put a foot wrong all day at left-back then went on a mesmerizing run that took him past four opposition players, cut in and curled an absolute beauty into the top corner. You won’t see many better goals at this level. The only blip (and you could hardly call it that) saw the Submarines nick a goal.

Before an assault of monsoon rain and hail, Phoenix then probably put together the best twenty minute spell of football they have had this season. Toby was getting a lot of joy down the left combining effectively with Jules, and it was no surprise when Jules tucked in his second after a Pro-Evo style cut back from his partner in crime. Jamie ‘Arshavin’ Davies then let the excitement go to his head as he tried to put in a sixth with an outrageous lob attempt, despite the goalie being firmly planted on his line! Jules was causing mayhem for the opposition defence and after a few dodgy offside calls, he beat the trap and went round the keeper to earn a long-overdue hatrick. Almost as soon as the goal went in a ten minute deluge hit the pitch that was like an Indian monsoon. With huge puddles all over the pitch, the opposition put as lot of pressure to get the match abandoned. The referee said play on, and Pheonix smelt blood. Captain Lucas got a deserved goal before Jules picked out Toby on the left hand side to score with the last kick of the game. All in all a fantastic performance in difficult conditions. The Allstars put in a good performance against a determined Flyover Tuesdays side, in their 2nd must-win Group cup encounter.

A header from Ossack, a bullet volley from Nik, and another header from Kelly, saw off Tuesdays, who did well to equalise after allstars took the lead.

But quality displays from Ossack, Peace and Blandy ensured the Allstars 3-1 win and gave themselves a chance of qualifying for the quarter final of the Group Cup by beating TPR (after it was rained off last Sunday) in the coming weeks.

Well done all – onwards and upwards - watch this space....
