Kick off is at 2pm sharp ON ASTRO at:

The John Orwell Sports Centre Tench Street Wapping London E1 The nearest tube is Wapping & it's about a 3 minute walk from the station (signposted directly opposite the exit). However tubes both district and circle line are not working on Sunday so finding a lift is essential. Myself and the Wall can pick up Luke, De’ath and Nick. I suggest that Sumner and Miles get a lift with Treen or Fleshie.Kick off is 2pm and we have to be pretty sharp on time as we only have the pitch until 3.30 - we can warm up beforehand though as the booking before ours is only half a pitch for 5-a-side.

It’s a big chance for the 2nd XI to progress in the cup. Groucho are bottom of the league above and there for the taking especially with this strong Gower side. Win this and a cup team that is not good enough to play in any league is all that stands between us and being in the knock-out stages for the first time in the clubs history.

From Robin Street - 30th Birthday bash

On Friday 8th all the Gowers are cordially invited for a few beers from 7 onwards at the North London Tavern in Kilburn, 2 mins from the tube. I have booked the room upstairs for the evening (where there is very good food served til 9). Its to celebrate my 30th and after coming to an agreement with my theme-obsessed wife, everyone should wear a of hat of some description (a much easier option than the alternative of super heroes)

Wives, girlfriends, boyfriends all welcome, just let me know if you can make it.

Would be great to see as many of the footy boys there as possible and it is specifically being held on a Friday night so we have time to recover for the Sunday...

cheers
Streety

Gowers 1st XI 1 Ultramarine 1

Gowers lined up Chelski style 4-5-1 with Mitchell sitting in front of the back four, Durrant, Street and Duggan in a three in front of him with Klinger playing left side just behind the striker Kelly.

The formation worked really well, right from the opening whistle. But it was the superb battling, composure and communication that led to the Gowers dominating the opposition. Chances galore soon developed, throughout the first half. Excellent work from Klinger (in the Robben role) who was in space on the left, created us lots of action and chances, but it was Streets fine example of a Lampard impression in midfield, that was the highlight of a first half in which Gowers pummelled their opponents. Duggan bullet header, just missed the post, Kelly’s one on one lob was anticipated by the keeper, but the domination was such that we felt a goal had to come.

Durrant’s superhuman throws eventually paid off, when his throw was heading directly into the goal, keeper parried it and Streety was there to nod in.

1-0 Gower – not the prettiest, but the all-important lead, after teaching Ultramarine how to play football. End of first half.

To their credit Ultramarine came out with a different intensity in the 2nd half.

Gowers weren’t on the ball as much as the first half, and Ultrarmarine started to play the ball through the midfield like any side should.

Not that any real chances were forthcoming from Ultra, as our defence was so strong, and organised throughout, including Renton in goal.

This has been a real strength for us this season. Knowing that there are very few errors at the back, if any at all, gives the midfield the security to know that, should the team go off the boil for a period, the opposition have to do something pretty special or freakish to score against us. A credit to all the back four.

Once we rode the Ultra storm, Gowers again began to string some good passing together, switching the plays, and using the important channels.

Great chances inevitably materialised, but none were put away by the likes of Klinger, Kelly and Durrant – some of which were due to some ridiculously good saves by their keeper.

It began to become very frustrating, watching these missed opportunities to kill off the game, but it just didn’t happen

Time ticked on, Gowers still comfortable especially Ossack at the back.

Ultra only had 2 or 3 chances the whole game to talk about, and Gower must have had 10 or 12.

And it was in the final 30 seconds, that Gower conceded a corner, on which all the tall Ultra boys, came up for the final play of the game.

Corner came onto 6 yard box, Renton tried to punch into a crowd of players, got a touch on it, it was hooked back in to the mix, Ultra player shot, hit Chittenden on the line, his defensive rebound fell to their player 3 yards in front of goal, who swiped it in.

1-1

Absolute first class sickness.

Rarely have I been lost for words to my team mates, but when the final whistle blew 20 seconds later, I was.

Gowers put in a performance to be proud of. Everyone us had a good game. Especially Mitchell on his comeback, in a unfamiliar role, Klinger always a threat, and Duggan and Street running the shop from the midfield.

But it was plain and simple, why we didn’t win this one today. The old adage of not putting away your chances. You cant afford to miss…. 3 ……well-created….. one on ones in any game, no matter when your only 1-0 up.

We all know there is always that threat of a freak last minute equaliser. And it hit us on Sunday, where it hurts.

But you know what, it aint all bad boys. We bounced back perfectly from last weeks disappointment, playing some stylish stuff at times, and never really being troubled at the back. We haven’t been beaten yet in the league, and we are still in pole position.

Learn from this, make damn sure it doesn’t happen again, and look forward to next week, when we can play some great stuff again and really make it count.

MOTM = Robin Street – not only best engine on the pitch, but consistently played some uncharacteristically wonderful passes and through-balls, and scored to top it all off. Exceptional performance.

Match Report: 12.11.06

White Heat Bogles- 1 Gower 2nd XI – 8

Gower 2’s secured a confidence building whitewash of the leagues bottom team in fair conditions down at Wormwood scrubs. The 2’s were hit by a late back injury to Muffdog and a no-show by Leon. Yet by comparison the opposition were a complete mess and worthy of their position at the bottom of the table, they started with 7 and went up to 10 men by 10 minutes in, Gowers went down to ten men themselves after half an hour with Fleshie off to see Arsenal.

The team lined up Hill in goal, across the back Dens, Treen, Elliot and Sam, in midfield Sumner, Nick, The Wall and Henry. Jon and Fleshie led the frontline.

Unsurprisingly Gowers dominated possession as they sought to breakdown a stubborn opposition defence marshalled by an excellent keeper. Eventually Jon turned the ball in after constant pressure from the flanks. Then disaster as Luke and Elliot complete misunderstood each other in attempting to clear a long ball, the two Gowers ran in to each other allowing Bogle to equalise. 1-1.
Gowers didn’t dwell on the error, pouring forward with strength in numbers. The Wall and Nick communicated well and made sure that clever passes were the order of the day. On the right Henry terrorised the oppositions flank players with his tough tackling, while Sumner’s skill and footballing brain embarrassed Bogle’s right hand side. With Treen imperious as ever alongside Elliot both Gower’s full backs pushed forward, eventually leading Fleshie to hit home from inside the area. Jon, a bison like forward whose strength was likely that of the opposition’s back four combined, charged and bucked his way across the forward line, eventually forcing it in to make it 3-1. Then just before half time Nick, the midfield puppet-master, headed in to secure a 4-1 lead.

The second half for Gowers was all about team building and developing good habits. A powerful cross from Jon was met by a sliding finish from a Bogle defender, a great own goal. The enigma that is Luke Hill then scored a quick fire two, giving him the best goals per time on the pitch ratio in the team. Luke has all the attributes to be a 20 + goals a season striker, however he needs to give serious thought to his game and avoid snap spectacular efforts in favour of a more subtle approach. Treen scored a regulation unmarked header to make it 8-1 before Jon had his hat trick denied by the keeper saving his penalty after Sumner was felled.

So all in all a regulation drubbing of a weak and disorganised team. Gower 2’s played well within themselves but the signs of the ability to compete with the best are clearly there. Wall and Nick excelled in the middle and not one single player disappointed.

MOTM: Jon Sumner- Terrorised the opposition with his subtle passing, direct running and range of skills. Clearly one of the teams most gifted players, he was involved in most of the goals and had his best game yet in a Gowers shirt.
