Huge huge game for the club – it’s one game being played as a double header. League match worth 3pts and a cup game in the quarter-final of the MA Cup. (NB Extra time is possible),

Everyone needs to be at their best, and focused on winning – they are not a physical side, so we need to concentrate on putting ourselves about, and playing right through them. Goal, Goal, Goal.

Winners boys, winners….

12pm Kick Off

Gentlemen,

We’re approached the crunch section of our inaugural season and we are in an excellent position to walk away with a league and cup double. Everything is in our own hands and we need to keep winning. After beating the league leaders last week we are now up against an unbeaten mid-table team. On a true surface and with an excellent all round squad we have no excuses to be anything but our best.

Play for the Gower next to you, work for the team and we will prevail.

Strength and honour,

Dens

BVH vs Gower Allstars - 3-0 win - MA Cup 2nd rnd

Gower Allstars took on a depleated BVH side in the MA Cup 2nd with a double-header tie (in the quarters & league), against Tigers this coming Sunday, lying ahead…

Owen Blandy made his debut proper, for the first time upfront partnering Mike Kelly, and what a debut it was.

The Allstars got off to another flier, with a powerful start, leading to an early one-one opportunity, for Blandy who was fed by a perfect ball from Duggan, leading to a fine finish from the youngsters.

1-0 Gower.

Worry times developed when Stiefel was reduced to hopping after his pre-match ass problem, was aggravated further with a sliding challenge – so Allstars were effectively playing with 10-men until Layton the Wall turned up after his match at the Phoenix, 20 mins later.

It mattered not to this dominant team……after some fine play down the right channel, involving Durrant, fed Kelly, who combined perfectly with Blandy in a one-two, which opened the goal for Blandy to blast home – a great team goal.

2-0 Gower.

Apart from the odd hoof forward, Gowers knew the opposition were not imposing themselves with any real purpose or threat, and that enabled the likes of Duggan and Street to start and create some fine moves for the team, ending up with 2 or 3 openings for the strikers – but, much to the frustration of the Gaffer, whilst they were very much like Angelina Jolie (pleasing on the eye), they were not finished off and came to nothing.

Kelly made amends with a super strike on the edge of the box from a corner, switching from his right to his left foot and curling into the top corner, giving the keeper no chance.

3-0 HT and effectively game over.

The second half was largely dominated by Gowers again, with some fantastic team play, using the full width of the back four, to switch play, overlap and create openings down the channel – and it was only for near misses and ridiculous offside decisions (from the painful ref Tony) that the lead did not increase further.

Gowers dominated throughout and the defence did not allow Rod to be worked once in 90 mins. A througoughly professional performance. One of champions? One of cup winners?

That is in your hands Gentlemen. As Alex Ferguson has quoted on many occasions – the most important part of the season is the last 2 months, as all your hard work can come to nothing…. And make no bones, you carry on like this, and we will be champions – and we will win some silverware.

But you must remain focused, keep concentrated and be clinical – more clinical than ever. Well done boys, you deserve everything that comes your way. Lets push on and take Tigers next week, which should more or less secure us the league, and get us into the MA Cup semi-final – against the top 3 teams in the Premier division. Exciting times…

MOTM = The whole team deserved this really, but this weeks goes to Owen Blandy, constant threat throughout and looked a class act on his debut on a difficult surface, and finished off with a brace. Different gravy.

Phoenix Team Spirit Cuts Tigers Teeth

Gower Phoenix – 3 London Tigers – 1

Gower Phoenix (4-4-2) Dan – Dens, Ell, Thompo, Wall – Aaron, Adam, Jon, Muffdog – Fleshie, Bolu

On a bright and barmy March morning the men of the Phoenix did themselves proud in a solid, in not sometimes scrappy, win over the joint league leaders. An early kick off at the school fields saw some worrying omens. Firstly Elliot, the keymaster, was delayed after a road traffic accident, Muffdog and Jon were delayed due to an explosion at Camden and Adam Lucas turned up without the kit, cue frenzied running around.

Eventually after a traditional Hanna dynamic session the team lined up 4-4-2 with Thompo coming back into the defence to fill in for the missing Treen, whose operation was a success and is currently on the road to recovery – hopefully in the next five weeks. Muffdog dropped into right midfield to allow Fleshie to return after several months out with injury.

Phoenix, perhaps partly due to the frenzied pre-match arrival, started somewhat slowly and the game was fragmented with messy breakdowns in the centre of the field. Soon both wingers found early space on the flanks and Adam Lucas flashed an early chance just wide of the post with his left foot. Tigers were competing well in the midfield but they were finding little success against an organised back four led commandingly by Thompo who had an excellent game throughout.

Decent work again in the middle saw Bolu skip through one on one half way through the half and the keeper did well to snatch the ball from the onrushing strikers feet. With Fleshie stretching the oppositions defence with his drift left, Bolu was allowed a free reign to constantly threaten the Tigers goal with a number of free kicks and half chances coming the Gowers way. One such free kick was flighted in by Dens onto Thompos diving header that lacked power enough to beat the keeper.

Eventually Gowers took a lead that reflected their hard work in hot conditions, and it was a gem. Decent work again from Bolu and Fleshie saw the ball come to Adam Lucas and on the half volley he finished with considerable aplomb, 1-0 Phoenix.

The second half saw more controlled possession from the team. One main lesson to come from the game was that when attacking Phoenix can afford to stretch and switch play instead of rushing the move. A patient build up followed by rapid finishing (quick, slow, quick) is much more effective. The second goal came after Bolu bulldozed into the area and quick stepped his way around the Tigers defence passing to Lucas who was crudely hacked down, he stepped up to coolly slot his second and make it 2-0.

Despite holding a frosty line against the Tigers nimble forwards and following a superb blocking save from the out-rushing Dan, the Tigers pulled one back with a one on one from a clearly offside striker, 2-1 with 10 minutes to go and the pressure was on in this crucial league six-pointer. The Phoenix kept their head, Muffdog had a pile-driver scooped away by the keeper and after good work by Aaron on the left Fleshie curled home a sweet finish to secure the three points.

So the Phoenix march on. Really good team effort this one. We have it all in our own hands to win Division Two at the first time of asking and with a semi-final to look forward to and a good showing in the MA cup this is proving to be a memorable season. However we have not won anything yet and must stick together and continue to work hard for every minute of every game.

MOTM – Really tight call after excellent performances from Thompo at the back and Bolu up front. Going to have to go for Adam Lucas though, decisive goals at decisive moments, if only he could improve his general timekeeping…
