Gentlemen,

This Sunday sees a massive 6-pointer for the Phoenix against London Tigers. This Sunday we are the poachers as we aim to keep up our unbeaten run in the league with a goals pre game ratio over +4.

The team welcomes tough tackling Jon Selbie into midfield alongside Adam Lucas. Also back is Jake Emms and returning from injury classy striker Fleshie and Football puppet-master Thompo. We played some of the best football of the season last weekend and I am confident that we can repeat it again this Sunday against a Tigers team that was beaten heavily by Good Mixer the week before.

Black shorts, black socks and training tops please. Bring £5

Meet at the UCS Playing Fields, lower changing rooms at 9.30 PROMPT, so we have enough time to prepare for a 10am kick off.

Weather = Sunny, 14 Degrees C, certainly nice enough to invite down friends and family.

COME ON THE PHOENIX,

Dens

Groucho destroyed...in the league tie

The Allstars were relishing the opportunity to “teach” the mouthy Groucho a footballing lesson after last weeks less than pleasing performance on the hard astro in Wapping. This week was a different story – lovely 3g astro, strong team, and all the will in the world to take 3pts and march further on to promotion.

The difference between last week, and this week, was our start. Right from the off, the Allstars took control. Duggan versus their mouthy midfielder Barny was a no contest. Give us the right surface and we outplay anyone.

5 mins gone, flick from Durrant down the middle, sends Kelly one on one, who finishes with his left foot into the back of the net.

10 mins gone, Kelly picks up the ball 35 yards out, and wallops a high top-spinning effort over the keeper into the roof of the net. Spectacular.

20 mins gone, Durrant passes neatly into space yet again, to find the striker – this time Medley, in space who finishes one on one with keeper.

3-0 20 mins gone.

Groucho didn’t know what hit them. Defensively we were superb – led by Stiefel (first game in a month) who didn’t put a foot wrong and Howard (who stepped off a 24 flight the day before) who was reliable as ever. Duggan, Street, Klinger and Durrant in midfield dominating their opposite numbers and creating multiple chances.

A fourth goal came from a fine passing move down the right, when the play was switched to the left, to find Klinger, who implemented his usual lethal dummy, sending defender the wrong way, creating the space just inside the box on his right foot, and he banged it home under the keeper. Were the defender to be at our training every week, he would have anticipated the dummy, and known that it’s literally the only one is RK’s locker…and maybe would stopped the goal. But even-so credit to him, Klinger had a quality half, playing it simple, combining with Duggan and opening their midfield up.

Just before half-time, Medley sprinted onto a ball over the top – so did their keeper and their defender who collided, leaving Medley with an empty net to tap home.

4-0 HT – annihilation. Gower really showed why they are unbeaten and top of the league by 7pts.

Second half, to their credit Groucho never gave up. They continued battling, putting pressure on the Allstars defence and even sliding in with late, illegal, crunching tackles but the back four were simply too strong – and none of their attacks came to fruition.

Duggan continued in his Carrick type role, defending and passing well. But it was clearly difficult to motivate ones-self to push on and score more, when the game was won.

And that was how it finished.

5-0 Gower Allstars.

Although not vintage stuff, this was a masterclass against a decent side, who never gave up. Powerful and clinical sums it up – lead by MOTM James Duggan, who was under pressure to perform against a feisty midfield and more than delivered.

4 league games left. Two more wins and that should be promotion.
Semi-Finals of Divisional Cup and still well in the MA Cup with an easy enough route to the semis of that. This has got the potential to be the season of all seasons. Stay focused and make it so, so that you can remember this season for the rest of your lives!

Phoenix Go Second After Hanna Power Play

Gower Phoenix – 6 Camden Athletic – 2

Gower Phoenix (4-4-2) Dan – Dens, Alex, Wall, Ell – Jono, Jon, Lucas, Miles – Muffdog, Bolu

The men of the Phoenix marched on with an emphatic victory over a far from poor Camden side. Playing an early 10am kick off on a lush 3G surface Gower’s line up saw the return of Dens, Jono, Jon, Dan and Muffdog to the side. With Treeno out with a serious knee injury, Alex Wright moved into the centre to partner The Wall who dropped back from midfield. Round pegs were in round holes in a team brimming with talent, and it showed.

Phoenix went 1-0 up early doors are good wing pressure forced a series of corners that Jono swung in from the left, eventually finding Alex Wright who finished with a solid header after leaving his marker for dust. With the Phoenix defence alert to the route one Camden attacks the team went 2-0 up after a surging Jon Hanna run was left unchecked, allowing the burly midfielder to finish past the small but nimble Camden keeper.

With a 2-0 lead however, the team fell into a slight lull and allowed Camden to dictate the pace of the match for a period of time that eventually saw them claw a goal back after Jono lost possession on the left and the defence, exposed as overstretched, were unable to pick up a Camden runner who finished easily past Dan, 2-1. Despite several good chances for Bolu, Muffdog and Jon the score remained 2-1 at half time.

Second half and the Phoenix began to turn the screw and began to play some of the most fluid football of its fledgling history. Jon Hanna after bursting onto the left flank hit a cross on the fall that dipped over the keeper from 30 yards out to make it 3-1 and give the team its comfort zone back. More pressure from the hardworking Bolu saw several more corners conceded by Camden, one of which was turned in at the far post by The Wall after a flick on from Lucas to make it 4-1. Then goal of the game saw some slick interchange between Dens, Hanna and eventually Miles who drove into the box and finished classily to make it 5-1.

Camden were a beaten side and found it hard to keep possession as the Phoenix harried across the pitch. Sam Coleman came on for Ell and Aaron Stone for Sumner, both players immediately getting in on the action with a series of hard tackles. Then after Muffdog was felled 25 yards out Dens hit a cannonball effort that the keeper did well to tip over, from the resulting corner Alex Wright pounced again to make it 6-1 and although Camden made it 6-2 with a long range lob over Dan the game was won.

Another successful result for the Phoenix then. In its inaugural season the team is in the Semi-Final of the Divisional Cup and is placed 2nd in the league with a game in hand. As the highlander adage goes however, ‘there can only be one’ team to be promoted and next Sunday sees us go head to head with the league leaders. Considering how hard we made life for Premier league opposition this is a challenge to be relished. Strength and Honour and bring on the tigers…
MOTM - Alex Wright – Assured on the ball, strong in the air and a commanding presence in the back line. Chipped in with two goals to prove his threat from set pieces, a valuable addition to the team.
