Match Report (by Medley) - Gower Allstars vs Camden Mixer - Group Cup

All Stars get the result but still may not qualify in Group Cup

While the gaffer was chasing tail with his Calzaghe look the All Stars took the opportunity to be complacent against a team they beat 5-0 just three weeks ago. The teams attitude was discussed before the game and although players were in agreement they were too nonchalant it didnt stop Mixer taking the lead inside five minutes. From a free kick near the half way line a mixer player was first to the ball and side footed it on the volley past a stunned defence.

The rest of the game was played at a needlessly edgy tempo with Gower having all the possession but rushing the game. That said Durrant scored a lovely goal with a solid strike that arrowed into the bottom left hand corner from 13 yards out.

With the half time score 1-1 the famous Regents Park wind played to the All Stars advantage and lead to numerous chances mainly from floated balls in the box that were not finished by the likes of Medley, Botterill and Blandy. The game overall was edgy, rushed and ultimately not enjoyable due to much disjointed play.

That said, the game was won with two minutes to go when Botterill had the ball taken off him by Kelly who shots hit the defender, as Botterill started to rant, Blandy controlled the rebound then unleashed a shot that beat the keeper with a sizeable deflection. A late save from Paley ensured the All Stars took all three points.

The latest news on the grapevine is that Camden Mixer have decided to forfeit their final match against Pheonix meaning that the best the All Stars can hope for is to be one of the top two runners up from the six groups. Winning the final game may not be enough but if it is the -1 goal difference will need to be considerably improved. Glyn has emailed the league complaining and is awaiting a response.

Bit of composure next time please boys, We have the goods lets just play our game.

MOTM = Durrant - for solid performance allround and topped off with a fine goal.

After ninety minutes of what can be safely described as ‘Sunday league football’ – both sides walked away with a point to set up an intriguing last round of fixtures to be played on the 23rd of November.

Phoenix welcomed back the industrious Selbie, the legendary Wall and indefatigable Howie into the squad – with tall winger Mike K making his first appearance on the wing and the skillful Scot Mark starting alone up front.

The men of Gower struggled to make early inroads against a very disciplined Grocho back 4. Too often the midfielders found themselves playing on top of one another and the opposition shaded the first 20 minutes – with the Wall having to make one vital slide tackle to prevent a goal. Mark was finding it a lonely task up front despite occasional breaks from the wings. The best Phoenix chances came from a Lucas set piece and a series of in-swinging Dens corners –one just headed wide. At the other end Joe Paley fantastically saved a point blank header.

With ten minutes to go Phoenix went to a 4-4-2 and started looking more dangerous as Mike joined Mark up front – the two strikers exchanging passes and looking like creating chances in the final third.

At ½ time Howie came on and the Wall moved into the midfield to add some more muscle – his impact was instantaneous as he threaded a ball with the outside of his foot through to Mark who scuffed his effort. The game became increasingly scrappy and Mixer looked the more dangerous – but Treen, Dens, Ell and Howie looking dominant and Jamie Wood covering well in goal making a number of key interceptions.

In the dying minutes Phoenix defended well as a team and even came close with a Joe Paley effort.

So all is set up for the 23rd – beat Mixer and we are pretty much through (unless Grocho hammer the Allstars) – details of the fixture to follow but make sure you’re about!!!!!!! (Bolu is returning specially for the occasion)

MOTM – Treeno – shepherded the Phoenix defence with confidence and aplomb. Best moment – controlling the ball in the area before casually clipping it over his shoulder and clearing downfield – excellent.
