Asking you all to bring your family and friends to this one. Its gonna a dry sunny day, and a great match for your nearest and dearest to witness what you have been blabbering on about for the past 2 months - about how good a team we really are....

Because of the timing of the match, none of us obviously want to miss the Manu vs Chelsea game at 4pm, so the 1s and 2s are all going to a pub in Queens Park straight after, to have a pint, talk about our victories and watch a great game of footie. The pub and address is called The Corrib Rest, 76-82 Salisbury Road, Queen"s Park NW6 6PA.

Gower 1st XI 2 Ultramarine 0 - 19-11-06 Group Cup

Gower 1st’s took on Ultramarine for the third time in 3 months on Sunday – having won one, and drawn one against them.

We lined up with a new 3-4-3 formation to try out. With Chittenden, Ossack and Glyn at the back, Duggan left, Mitchell, Street and Durrant in midfield, Klinger in the hole with Kelly and Medley (back from injury) upfront.

Predictably Gowers dictated the pace of the game, nullifying Ultras midfield play. Whilst none of the team felt particularly comfortable with the formation, they still dominated throughout, with some good work in both channels from Duggan and Durrant.

This led to several exciting first half chances, with Kelly, Klinger and Medley all having early strikes at goal – but predictably enough none of them were on target.

The greatest chance of the first half, came from a Glyn free-kick on half-way which was classily “punted” forward, over the full-backs head, into the area which Medley walloped against the post, it then re-bounded to Klinger who from 12 yards, walloped the ball onto the cross-bar.

Chance missed.

Gowers continued to plug away with Mitchell and Street becoming steadily more involved in the game, winning their battles against their opposite numbers, and spreading the ball well across the pitch.

The deserved breakthrough came when Medley dropped very deep to pick up the ball, just inside Ultras half. He caught the run of Kelly running in behind the full-back and centre-back, and pinged a A1 pass over the defence to find Kelly one-on-one with the keeper at an angle, and finally Kelly chipped the keeper which bounced into the roof of the net

1-0.

Second half, we continued to feel somewhat uncomfortable with the unfamiliar 3-4-3 formation and there was no need to chase a goal – so we made substitutions on 55 mins of Gladstone and Howard for Duggan and Klinger, and reverted to 4-4-2.

This settled us down enormously, and within 5 minutes, Howard intercepted a potentially dangerous through-ball and his “quick thinking” pass right through the middle of the two centre-backs set Medley free down the middle – to give him a simple one-on-one with keeper – which he slotted away perfectly near-post.

2-0

Once we had the all important 2-0 buffer, Gowers could start playing some free-flowing football.

Durrant down the right was a constant threat going forward and his tackling in defence was superb too – and the Gowers were all delighted to see him rocking and rolling like he was last season. And his shooting……well nuff said.

Medley too was combining excellently with Kelly upfront – reading each others runs and playing each other “in”, to perfection several times. I recall 2 or 3 further one-on-one opportunities only for our shooting to let us down again.

And it was Street yet again who was the driving force behind the Gowers momentum. Constant badgering and hounding of his opponents broke up the attacks of Ultras, and turned defence into attack.

2-0 it finished.

Credit to the Gowers defence – as Dan O Hagan in goal on had to make one save all game long.

The team as a whole were awesome on the day – and far too strong for ultramarines – every one of you. Well done.

This tees us up nicely for our huge game against Crown & Goose next week. Bring it on!

MOTM = very close call between Durrant, Street and Medley – but im going with Medley because it was his first game in a month after an ankle injury, and his movement, control, passing and finishing were all top quality. His contribution to the team should not be underestimated. Well played Timbo.

Group Cup Game: Groucho-2 Gower 2nd XI-3

How do you understand amateur Sunday league? Why do hundreds of people across the country leave warm houses and the embraces of loved ones to venture to barren green pastures? Put simply there is something within each man that drives us to compete, to work with others, to fight, to win. Each of these traits was shown by the men of the Gower 2nd XI who took to the field against Groucho in the cup.

Following initial problems in the Home sides pitch coordination; kick-off was delayed until 3.30pm and moved from Tower Hill to Holborn. Gowers lined up 4-4-2 with Rod in between the sticks, Dens-Treen-Wall-Sam across the back four, Sumner-Nick-Jon-Miles in midfield and Luke alongside Fleshie up front. The referee, disappointingly often involved, was seemingly pissed and had a kestrel whistle. 5 minutes in he gave a harsh penalty for Sumner handballing, despite admitting to not really having known what happened. Groucho converted and Gowers were down early.

Things changed soon. On a true 3G surface intelligent running and passing began to probe away at the Groucho defence. Fleshie, easily possessor of the finest Gower footballing brain, forced play wide and Miles’ cross from the right was crudely handled by one of the centre-backs, penalty, Fleshie, bottom right, 1-1, easy.

We continued to press, Sumner battling on the left while Nick and Jon competing in the central trenches. After more good work from Miles, Nick broke towards the edge of the area and finished with a well measured 20 yard strike, his second in two.

2-1. we were playing as a team, some of the passing was the best I’ve ever seen, Luke has his finest game in the hallowed maroon and black. Despite an early bicycle kick attempt, he settled down to a game of working hard, fighting for headers and tracking back to regain possession. The back four remained frosty, with Rod excelling with his commanding presence and a awe inspiring save from a free header that was worthy of the finest in the business.

The second half saw the solid back four repelling the expected Groucho early onslaught. Then breaking with pace and intent, Miles set up Jon Selbie for a 30 yard pile-driver that the Groucho keeper could barely parry, the ball ending up in the back of the net, 3-1.

Henry and Elliot came on for the tenacious Sam and the excellent Fleshie with 25 minutes to go. Soon after confusion in the Gower defence allowed Groucho to claw one back (3-2) and Gowers were up against it for the remaining twenty. Cue another awful penalty decision against us following a Dens tackle and the glare of Rod forced the Groucho striker to chip it over the bar. Still 3-2.

For the remainder every single player showed great spirit to keep the victory secure. Dens and the Wall produced key interceptions and Elliot cleared from the line, all under the watchful play of the ever-reliable Treen. So 3-2 it ended, a great cup night, a real team milestone and one to remember.

MoM: Miles – Superb fitness combined with drive and product. Got assists for all three goals. Was a constant thorn in the oppositions back with willing running and unselfish passing. He will be a great asset for the club.
