Gower Allstars match report - Group Cup Music Choice 25-11-07

Gowers made hard work of the final group cup tie against a resilient Music Choice at Regents Park.

Whilst there was a clear and marked difference in the quality on both sides, it was a frustrating first 30 mins for Gowers who unusually gave away possession too many times early in the game to get any real momentum building.

It took Gower 40 mins to break the dead-lock when the returning Medders was sent through one on one and finished from an angle in off the post.

And this lead was doubled early in the second half, when Botterill slipped in Medley behind the defence, with a perfect pass, which Medley finished off to give Gowers 2-0 lead.

Gowers did not really ever move into 5th gear, even though the opposition were building more momentum as the half went on.

And the Gowers were punished when a classic Carson by Paley in goal, gifted Music Choice a come-back goal.

2-1 75 mins gone.

Botterill, to his credit stood out in the midfield battling and penetrating Music Choices defence.

But the next goal did not go Gowers way either.

Another mis-judgement by the usually reliable Paley, gave Music Choice a tap in which levelled the scores with 7 mins remaining.

Finally Gowers woke up and with only a couple of minutes remaining, the injured Medley raced onto a bouncing through ball, and beat the keeper to the chase, and finished off a fine hatrick and gave Gowers an important win, which sees them through to the quarter finals of the Group Cup in 2 weeks time (Dec 9th – opposition tbc next week).

MOTM = overall performance Botterill - but for penetration Medley for his hatrick.

Gents,

The next 3 weeks are the Allstars most important of the season so far.

Dec 2nd – Virgin in the league at Regents Park.
Dec 9th – Group Cup quarter final
Dec 16th – Outback away.

We need you ALL available as much as possible in these next 3 weeks. Starting this coming Sunday. And that is the ONLY focus for now.

Virgin have been playing superbly since their 4-1 spanking at the hands of the Allstars, earlier in the season. They should have beaten Red Star, and this Sunday just gone, they demolished Outback 7-0, yes 7-0, in the Group Cup. And having spoken to them, they are WELL up for revenge against Gower this weekend.

A couple of weeks ago, you may have presumed this to be a foregone conclusion. But certainly not now. They are on fire. And we will have to be at the very top of our game, to beat them on Sunday.

Absolute concentration, and focus during the game, with proper “Gower” battling in every position. We need to have 11 winners all over the pitch. Nothing less.

Remember with the league situation so damn close, any loss and our title ambitions are seriously dented.

Think about it during the week. Don’t have a massive one on Saturday and be ready for it Sunday. Really ready.
Out.

Late Goal Breaches Phoenix Defences

Group Cup: Jubilee -1 Gower Phoenix -0

Gower Phoenix (4-4-2) Greg- Dens, Treeno, Luke, Henry – Muffdog, Lucas, Wall, Miles – Jon, Fleshie

Hackney Marshes proved an unhappy hunting ground for the men of the Phoenix as a late Jubilee free kick eluded Greg and won what was an ugly game all round.

Following serious issues with the oppo’s timings / refs / nets etc. eventually Gower kicked off and almost scored in the first minutes as Lucas broke through but scuffed his shot. On a windy day against a physical opposition that pressed the Phoenix high up the pitch the level of passing was catastrophic with normally accomplished players giving the ball away too often.

The calm at the centre of the storm throughout was Treeno – a rock against which the Jubilee attacks broke with little quarter given.

Jon Hanna was also proving a handful but was not given the right level of service for all his storming running.

Second half saw Dens go off when his boots fell to bits and saw Muffdog concede a penalty with a hefty tackle in the box. The Jubilee striker smashed it miles over.

Hanna then saw a header just flash wide and Lucas missed another good chance in a very forgettable encounter. The Jubilee free kick goal, which followed a hug off between the Wall and his opposite number was rough justice, especially for the back four who worked tirelessly under the leadership of Treen.

Fleshie almost equalised with a free kick near the death but the Phoenix were to be denied. Not our cup this one – but top of the league with two games to go before Christmas and a learning experience had in the depths of Hackney..

MOTM: Treeno – best player on the pitch by a fair margin.

Paintball Fun

Highlights:
Treen 'the lone wolf', Miles and Jakes rearguard attack on Mike Kelly, Oli D pleading not to be shot, Adam Lucas hiding in a corner of a hut, Phil's jacket, Medders arse shots, Klinger loving the shooting range and many more....
