Phoenix Set League Record in Key Relegation Battle

Gower Phoenix 11 C@G 1

Gower Phoenix (4-4-2) Rod – Dens, Treen, Bradley, Jamie W – Botts(Hanna 45’), Miles, Rob(Luke 60’), Lucas(Chris 35’) – Toby, Bolu

Goals – Bots (4), OG, Rob, Lucas, Chris, Toby, Bolu, Treen

On a gloriously sunny day down on the 1st XI UCS pitch the men of the Phoenix continued their fine run to three big victories on the trot – winning a key 6-pointer relegation battle in the process.

As against Virgin, Phoenix hit C@G fast from the start – moving the ball around the midfield and attacking from the flanks. Bolu and Toby were linking well with Botts who came in for the injured Paley and nabbed a first half four goal haul, including an exquisite finish from a tight angle.

Highlights of the 1st half included some good organised defending with Treen and Wood clearing their lines well while Dens and Bradley linked play to the midfield and attack. Rob and the semi-injured Lucas were bossing the midfield and Rob scored an excellent volley from outside the area after controlling the ball on his chest.

Toby and Bolu were busy providing the assists with Miles helping Toby and Lucas both getting on the score sheet. Phoenix forced an OG and Chris finished well from the right to make it 9-0 at ½ time.

The second ½ was much harder work as a reorganised Phoenix team stepped off the gas and C@G were much improved. Important tackling from the defence keep the score as it was until a lovely flowing move put Phoenix 10-0 up. Miles broke from the back and playing a fast ball into Toby who expertly laid it off allowing Dens to advance over the half way line and play a deep cross that Bolu manoeuvred into the net.

C@G hit back from a 2nd phase of a set piece but another counter-attack saw Treen run the length of the pitch to finish from Toby’s pass to make the game a 11-1 record breaking result for the Phoenix.

Got a double header home then away against TPR coming up and although there is light at the end of the tunnel we still need to deliver the goods in the coming weeks to confirm our place in this league.

Well done!

MOTM – Rob – bossed the central midfield and looked strong in both attack and defence – becoming a critical component to Phoenix’s success.
